  3. Mindset • with practice,trainingand method, • we manage to: increase our attention, our memory, our judgment • and literally become more intelligent than we were before.

  4. Purposeful Engagement • it’s not always the people who start out the smartest • Who end the smartest

  5. Fixed vs Growth Mindset • Fixed Mindset – • Believing that your qualities are carved in stone …….. (intelligence is static) • creates an urgency to prove yourself over and over.

  6. Growth Mindset • The hand you’re dealt is just the starting point for development • Based on the belief that your basic qualities are things that you can develop through your efforts

  7. Fixed Mindset • Leads to a desire to look smart and therefore a tendency to: • Avoid challenges • Get defensive or give up easily • See no value in effort • Ignore useful or negative criticism • Feel threatened by the success of others

  8. Growth Mindset • Intelligence can be developed • Leads to a desire to learn and a tendency to: • Embrace challenge • Persist in the face of setbacks • See effort as the path to mastery • Learn from constructive criticism • Find lessons and inspiration in the success of others

  9. Adolescence • Is a time when hordes of kids turn off to school. You can almost hear the stampede as they try to get as far from learning as possible. • It is also the time when they are facing some of the biggest challenges of their young lives, when their self-esteem is in doubt.

  10. Brainology • New research shows that the brain is more like a muscle – it changes and gets stronger the more you use it. • The brain forms new connections and ‘grows’ when people practice and learn new things • the more you challenge your mind to learn, the more your brain cells grow.

  11. Change • People can change their mindsets when they are ready to embrace change and value effort. • when they value the process, and not just the end-product. • Change is never easy, but usually worthwhile.
