What We’ve Done So Far: Orientation 2009 – 22 new teachers, 80 + returning teachers Orientation Highlights: Use of 1101 Reader and 1101 Pedagogy Book in sessions Community-building events each night (dinners, bowling) Andrea Lunsford visit Orientation survey results from teachers (highlights): “USF, more than any school I've ever been to, really seems to foster the community spirit -- its graduate program and TA programs all the more so.”“I loved working with the mentors. It was very helpful to have them around to offer their perspectives on teaching, and their enthusiasm made what could have been daunting into a more manageable experience.]“Because the a lot of the orientation was run by other students, it was less like a lecture and more like a sharing of ideas. This environment makes the community really obvious to me. I think the activities after work help to introduce us newbies to that community.”“Mentors and faculty alike displayed a willingness to help but also a passion for the work. These are the main ingredients that infect me with a similar desire to do well and to communicate and work with others.” “Excellent work and thanks to all involved: mentors, coordinators, teachers, faculty, staff. The orientation made me feel like I am in the right place due to the quality and availability of help and collaboration. The spirit and atmosphere help me to believe that I will thrive here at USF.”

What We’ve Done So Far (continued): • Weekly meetings with new teachers, regular classroom observations • Implementation of Weekly Social Events – Sabbatical Thursdays every Thursday night at CDB Pizza; Monthly softball game at Riverfront Park • Active roles in EGSA, development of readers and pedagogy books, community-building events

  4. Lead FYC assessment efforts (A-F paper criteria, rubric development, comparison of instructor grades to mentor grades) • Gather FYC project materials: sample papers, sample rubrics, videos, presentations, articles, essays, creative work, sample blogs • Incorporate editorships positions into the mentoring program • More community-building activities: continuation of Sabbatical Thursdays, softball games, kayaking trips, holiday events Future Plans:
