  3. Main Opportunities in new Courses of Study • Removal of dual system • Changes in WACE and University entrance criteria • Changes in subject/course selections • Specialist opportunities • Flexibility in unit combinations • Career & Enterprise CoS

  4. Removal of Dual System • Currently 33 TEE subjects; of which 12 are LOTE. • About 300 other wholly school-assessed or non-TEE subjects. • Dual system – made counselling difficult and ‘locked’ students in very early. • Now ALL 50 CoS will count equally towards Uni entry and TAFE entry.

  5. Key changes in Uni Entry • Most entrance criteria remain similar – best four subjects/courses, TER, pre-requisites, unacceptable pairings, ELC, 50:50 split . • List 1 and List 2 removed • WACE required – breadth requirements • Can accumulate scores over 5 or more years

Key Changes to WACE • Much is the same – complete 20 units; min level 4; ELC • Now has some breadth requirements – coverage of OLOs; outcomes from 5 CoS; three 2-unit combinations. • Removal of ‘C’ average over Year 11 and 12 • Introduction of Curriculum Council Endorsed Units – up to 8 of 20 units

  7. Possible counselling implications of these changes • Schools could implement 5/5 grid – “liberated” by no List 1 and 2; no 4 x ‘C’ in Year 12. • Movement away from “traditional TEE” CoS • Possible increase in Health and PE and Technology learning areas; and decrease in ………

Specialist Opportunities • Health Studies – Enrolled Nursing; Aged Care; Child Care • Business Management and Enterprise – links to Uni courses; Business etc at TAFE • Media Production & Analysis – Film and TV; Multimedia Qualifications • Applied Info Technology – Cert II and possibly parts of Cert IV in IT • Others?

  9. Curriculum CouncilEndorsed Units • “Formal” – TAFE UoCs; University Studies; Structured Workplace Learning; Vendor Programs • “Less formal” – Cadets; Calm Bushrangers; D of E; Structured Courses; Sports Coaching; Christian Service & Retreats; Community Service; Industry programs etc

  15. Counselling & Flexibility in Units • Complete some in year 10; WACE over 3 years • Combined 11 and 12 classes • Single units – or pairs • Focus on 4/5 courses – or units from many courses • One unit over whole year • Repeating units

  16. Counselling Possibilities with Endorsed Units • Career Counselling program developed centrally or by school • Industry programs and placements • Transition planning activities etc

  17. VET Possibilities - Models • VET ‘in’ or embedded in CoS • VET Stand alone • VET as a CoS

  18. VET Possibilities - Expansion • To new industry areas – eg engineering studies; Health Studies etc • To traineeships and SAL program • To higher credentials for higher achieving students e.g. Cert III and IV.
