  3. Purpose of the Course • To learn basics of Hydrology and Water Resources • Introduction to Hydrologic and Hydraulic Modeling (will discuss few models and their applications)

Introduction of the Course • Course Schedule Class: • Day: Every Wednesday • Time: 04:00 PM – 6:00 PM Workshop (scheduled): • Day: Every Friday • Time: 04:00 PM– 07:30 PM (including namaz breaks) Workshop (Visits outside IST): • Students will be informed whenever there are outside visits • Office Hours • Check my availability and drop-in

Bedient (4th Edition) • Hydrology and the Management of Watersheds (3rd Edition. 2003) by Brooks • Water Resources Engineering 2nd Edition by Linsley and Franzini • Hydrology: H. M. Ragunath Status • available in Library/Course website

Theory • Introduction to Hydrology and Water Resources • Precipitation: Types, Measurements, Analyses • Hydrologic Losses: Infiltration, Evaporation, Evapotranspiration • Watershed Management : Watershed characteristics, rainfall-runoff response, hydrograph analysis, runoff estimation (runoff models), water budget • Floods: frequency analysis, flood routing, flood forecasting, flood management • Stream Flow Measurement/Monitoring: flow measuring techniques and devices, open channel hydraulics • Groundwater: Hydrology and hydraulics • Optimization (Linear programming): Application to hydro-systems • Role of RS and GIS in hydrology ( A brief discussion and sum up of course)

Term Project • Main Project • Individual projects will be assigned to students based on weekly exercises (will start from week 3rd) • Project report due at the day of presentation • Mini Project • Kalabagh Dam: All good and Bads • Split the class into two groups • One will be the ‘pro’ group and the other will be the ‘against’ group • By mid semester there will be a debate between the two groups • Each group will be given 25min to talk about their views and support them with facts and figures (reliable references needed) • Then there will be a question/answer session between the two groups. Audience may also ask question

Homework/Project/Quiz/Exams • Homework: Students will be required to do homework and submit on the date mentioned on homework • Workshop Assignments: Each student will be assigned an exercise after each lab topic covered that will eventually be converted into term project • Quiz: Several in class Quiz (both surprise and informed) • OHT: 2 in class OHT (approximately 1/3 of the course coverage) • Lab Midterm: 1 Lab midterm (decide later) • Project Presentation: On week before Final Exam • Final Exam: Comprehensive coverage of the course during the last week of semester
