Middle School Awareness • All students enter middle school with the potential to continue their education after high school • Youngsters sometimes make decisions in the early school years which limit their choices • Planning is important for every student; especially those who aren’t yet thinking about college

  3. Potential Problems • Limited Options may result from: ~ poor grades ~ poor course planning

  4. Keep Options Open • Students who plan have choices: ~ some may choose NOT to exercise them ~ not every student will be thinking about college ~ each child deserves the opportunity to make that choice

Also Required for Graduation • The state and federal governments require that students take tests each year to determine proficiency at various grade levels.  As part of the No Child Left Behind Act, all students will eventually be tested in grades 3-8, and in one grade at the high school level.  • Students must pass the HIGH SCHOOL PROFICIENCY ASSESSMENT (administered during the junior year) in order to graduate.

  24. Spanish Spanish for Heritage Speakers:This course is designed for Hispanic students who already speak Spanish fluently. It is offered for grades 9-12 at the A or H level.

  26. Why should I be interested in points that lead to the MYP Certificate? • Your child’s performance will be compared to International Standards • There will be internal and external validation of your child’s progress • Our definition of rigor will be verified

What are the educational benefits of the Personal Project? • The student will master the ability to do research in an area of personal interest • The student will improve her ability to write with clarity on an extensive piece of research • The student receives one-to-one help with writing and research on an extensive paper • The student receives a Pass/Fail on the transcript & the title of the research is printed • The student is provided with evidence that she is a capable independent researcher and writer • An early opportunity for a sense of accomplishment

  28. How does MYP add safety nets for my child? • Teachers in MYP must have collaborative planning time. • English, Social Studies, Science, PE, World Language, Math, and Art

  30. In addition to the values reinforced in the experience of helping others, how can my child use the community service requirements to enhance his portfolio? A minimum of 53 documented hours a year of service.

  31. Will my child learn a different curriculum?No, the Cherry Hill curriculum is used in each MYP class.Will my child be locked in if he hates the program? No, any student who does not wish to be included in the program may opt out before the Fall of the sophomore year.What does he have to do that would not be required of him if he was not in the full program?Students in MYP need to document 53 hours of community service/year and complete a research project by January of the sophomore year.
