  6. Assassination Attempt on Pope John Paul II- May 13, 1981

  7. Pope John Paul II was shot four times • Mehmet Ali Agca was attempted assassin • Sentenced to life in prison- in 2000 he was pardoned at the request of the Pope. Sent to another prison to serve terms for other offenses- released in 2010 • One theory is he was hired by KGB because of Pope’s support of the Polish movement for independence • Pope and Agca met and developed a relationship- Pope announced he forgave Agca

Two truck bombs struck buildings housing the U.S. and French forces • Killed a total of 299 American and French servicemen (241 American servicemen- 220 were Marines) • Suicide bombers detonated each of the truck bombs • It was the deadliest single-day death toll for the Marines since the Battle of Iwo Jima

  20. Operation Urgent Fury • Triggered by a military coup that had ousted a revolutionary government • Restored a constitutional government • There had been a request for intervention • Invasion began Oct 25, 1983 (just a couple of days after the bombing of the U.S. barracks in Beirut)

  26. 1984- Bhopal Disaster • December 2, 1984 • Pesticide plant in Bhopal, India leaked methyl isocynate gas and other chemicals • Dense toxic cloud • Killed more than 8000 people in just a few days • Factory belonged to Union Carbide- made a settlement with the Indian Government in 1989 for $470 million (a total of only $370 to $533 per victim) • Groundwater and soil is still contaminated

  33. January 28, 1986 • Broke apart 73 seconds into flight • 7 crew members died • O-ring seal in its right solid rocket booster failed at liftoff- it allowed pressurized hot gas from within the solid rocket motor to reach the outside

Part of the deal was that the U.S. would send 508 American made TOW anti-tank missiles from Israel to Iran for the safe exchange of a hostage (Reverend Benjamin Weir) • Israelis offered to ship 500 HAWK surface to air missiles to Iran in November 1985 in exchange for the release of all remaining American hostages being held in Lebanon • Arms were sold with proceeds going to the Contras, and hostages were released

Eventually the terrorists elected to kidnap more hostages following their release of the previous ones • Lebanese magazine Ash-Shiraa published a series of articles in November 1986 that exposed the weapons for hostages deal • Congress issued a report that the president bore “ultimate responsibility”

  40. North had been the main negotiator • He stated he was “under the orders from his superiors” • May 1989 he was convicted of unlawfully destroying government documents • When George H.W. Bush became president- North’s conviction was expunged on the grounds he acted out of patriotism • Bush issued presidential pardons for all indicted in the scandal

Oil Spill in Prince William Sound, Alaska • March 24, 1989- hit a reef • Spilled 260,000 to 750,000 barrels of crude oil • Considered to be one of the most devastating human caused environmental disasters • Remote location made it difficult for a response effort • Captain had been drinking heavily- but was not at the controls (he was asleep)

  45. Third mate who was at the controls did not have a radar that was working (had been broken for about a year) so he could not look to see it was close to the reef • Exxon management knew the radar was broken and had opted to not fix it
