  1. What is Health? What is Wellness?

  2. Health “Health means your personal well being taking into consideration physical, mental, emotional, spiritual, and social components.” In other words…the well being of your body, mind, and relationships with others.

  3. Wellness Wellness is a broader view of health: It is a combination of physical, mental and social well being. All three aspects are equally important and need to be balanced. If one area is lacking then eventually the other two areas will be affected.

  4. Physical Health “How well your body functions…” You can carry out daily tasks without getting tired? You have enough energy to go to school and work? You enjoy your spare time? Contributing Factors: regular exercise, adequate sleep, proper medical and dental care

  5. Mental Health “How good you feel about yourself and how well you cope with the day-to-day demands of life.” You like yourself for who you are? You recognize achievement and learn from mistakes? You take time to relax? You share your feelings with others? You are willing to try new adventures?

  6. Social Health “How well you get along with others.” You have loving relationships? You respect the rights of others? You give and accept help? You make and keep friends? You communicate your needs to others? You build happy relationships with family members?

  7. HOW LONG WILL YOU LIVE? Average age for men: 74 Women: 80 Africa – Avg. age is 45. Down 5 years in the last 30 years. This is due to HIV/AIDS and poverty.

  8. Ways To live Longer… 5 Small meals a day – be a grazer Breakfast everyday Moderate exercise 6 days a week – 30 min. Adequate sleep – but don’t oversleep Don’t smoke Maintain a moderate weight – BMI NO alcohol or only in moderation Get a pet

  9. Ways to live longer – cont. Be optimistic – creates endorphins to heal Get a VAP - heart disease test Be rich Chill out Eat your antioxidants Marry well Meditate Laugh a little Manage stress

Check Your Wellness • Do you eat a balanced diet? • Do you exercise at least 3 times a week? • Do you like yourself? • Do you make time to relax? • Do you avoid drugs, alcohol and tobacco? • Do you get 8 hours of sleep? • Are there people you can talk to? • Do you express your feelings in a healthy way? • Are your decisions based on your own values and goals, rather than your friends
