  2. Essential Question!!! • How has the relationship between citizens and their government changed?

  3. Monarchy • 2000 BCE - 800 BCE • Power in the hands of a king • Ruled by…inheritance • Lost power by…the fact that the aristocrats realized that together they were more powerful than the king

  4. Oligarchy • 800 BCE-650 BCE • Power in the hands of a few wealthy/powerful • Ruled by… passing laws for the rich and hiring armies to force others to obey • Lost power by…poor (soldiers) overthrew the government

  5. Tyranny • 650 BCE-500 BCE • Power in the hands of one person, not a lawful king • Ruled by force, but often popular • Lost power when they stopped helping the people and ruled to harshly

  6. Democracy • 500 BCE-400 BCE • Power by the people • Direct (all vote) and Representative (elect people to vote for you) • Ruled with an assembly (lawmakers) • Problems: Powerful speakers easily persuade the people & decision often reversed

  7. Government Report Card • A=Excellent B=Good C=Average D=Poor F=Fail

  8. Debate!!! • Which form of government do you thinks deserves the highest overall grade and why?

  9. Points to consider! • Which gov’t is best for a small/large society? • Which gov’t is best in time of war? • Which gov’t allows you to get the most accomplished?

Closure! • Define the four types of government… • Monarchy- • power in the hands of one ruler (king or Queen) • Oligarchy- • power in the hands of a few (rich/smart) • Tyranny- • absolute ruling power held by one person , not a lawful king • Democracy- • ruled by the people (directly or through elected officials)
