  1. WHY DATA COLLECTION IS IMPORTANT Department Chair meeting April 22, 2009

  2. BUY IN … “Each year, according to the US Center for Disease Control, two million Americans acquire an infection while they are in the hospital. Ninety thousand die of that infection…their greatest difficulty is getting clinicians like me to do the one thing that consistently halts the spread of infection: wash out hands.” “-the idea of building on capabilities people already had rather than telling them how they had to change” (http://books,google.com)

  3. BUY IN I have found that simply asking for feedback from people is empowering to them. Especially when they see that their feedback is turned into action relatively soon. As the months have progressed more people have been answering the online questioners and been more and more willing to talk to me.

  4. Methodology – who and how 50 people were interviewed 8 people attended focus groups 26,38,42,58,36=200 people filled out surveys

  5. Assessment POSITIVE The main success is that most of the faculty are taking a more narrative approach to grading their students. As a result knowing the students better as learners and being able to teach them more effectively. DELTA The general understanding of the assessment plan varied. The US comment template is not aligned with the assessment expectations.

  6. Assessment • Should the different departments be aligned in their approach to assessment? • Should the different grade levels be aligned in their approach to assessment? • What work needs to be done to change the US comment forms to reflect the assessment?

  7. Technology POSITVE About fifty percent of the faculty who responded to the survey “can’t wait” or are “ready” for all the students to have laptops. During interviews two thirds of the faculty were excited… DELTA …and one third were scared of the change. They had many questions.

  8. Technology Professional Day • The February 17, 2009 Professional Development Day was developed in response to the need to prepare the faculty for the implementation of a full lap top program for 2009-2010 school year. • The faculty were thoroughly surveyed and interviewed to gauge their concerns and questions. • The Professional Development Day was aligned with their concerns.

  9. Technology • What sorts of ongoing professional development support will be needed to transition the community to a full lap top program? • What will be the new rolls for existing and/or new faculty and staff to support the transition? • Should there be a set of protocols set up to align the community’s expectations?

  10. Need to know Communication Hub DELTA • First thought there needed to be more information and more communication. POSITIVE • Then realized that all the important information is out there, but where? And what? • Research shifted to figuring out a “Hub” for the information. The Hub would be a centralized place for the personal information regarding benefits, logistical information, instructional information, information on how to support different non instructional departments, and information on the current activities of the school.

  11. Need to know Orientation POSITIVE The faculty are oriented well. They feel supported by there departments and have found the information that they need. DELTA Communication can always be better with new faculty before they get to campus

  12. Need to know • Where should information be posted for the entire community? • Should all relevant information be presented together? • What specific kinds information should be places on a centralized hub? • What kinds of information do we need to support new faculty better? • Who is in charge of monitoring the information?

  13. IPGP POSITIVE The IPGPs have successfully focused the faculty on: - designing units - incorporating the various instructional areas into their curriculum - they have taken risks in planning ambitious lessons - the faculty have enjoyed the instructional conversations within their department and across departments DELTA • The proposal format is redundant • More communication and feedback to the faculty.

  14. IPGP • How should the IPGP proposal form be revised? • How can we refine the unit design process to produce innovative, but manageable units? • Should everyone follow a mandated time line? • How many conversations should each department chair have with their faculty about IPGP? • How is the IPGP connected to the evaluation?

  15. Next Step… • Should the different departments be aligned? • How do we work as a department chair team? • How do we communicate new initiative ideas, as well as relevant information with faculty? • How do we give feedback to faculty to encourage their growth?
