  1. The 4 Legs of Roman Catholicism By Zeke Flores

  2. Here's a skeleton outline titled "The 4 Legs of Catholicism." The premise is that though there are many facets of doctrine that Catholics share with the denominational world at large, there are some that are peculiar to Catholicism only and form the "legs" on which the table of the religion rests. Disproving each doctrine is like cutting of a leg of the table, eventually it will fall. Zeke Flores Belen, NM

  3. Tradition • Catholic Catechism teaches that church tradition is just as authoritative as Holy Scripture. • Only 2 sources of authority: • Heaven (God). • Man.

  4. Tradition • Matt 21:23 • "And when He had come into the temple, the chief priests and the elders of the people came to Him as He was teaching, and said, "By what authority are You doing these things, and who gave You this authority?"

  5. Tradition • Matt 21:24 • And Jesus answered and said to them, "I will ask you one thing too, which if you tell Me, I will also tell you by what authority I do these things.

  6. Tradition • Matt 21:25 • "The baptism of John was from what source, from heaven or from men?" And they began reasoning among themselves, saying, "If we say, 'From heaven,' He will say to us, 'Then why did you not believe him?'

  7. Tradition • Jesus condemned man-made tradition. • Mark 7:5 • And the Pharisees and the scribes *asked Him, "Why do Your disciples not walk according to the tradition of the elders, but eat their bread with impure hands?"

  8. Tradition • Matt 15:8-9 • “THIS PEOPLE HONORS ME WITH THEIR LIPS, BUT THEIR HEART IS FAR AWAY FROM ME. 9'BUT IN VAIN DO THEY WORSHIP ME, TEACHING AS DOCTRINES THE PRECEPTS OF MEN.”

  9. Tradition • Mark 7:6-7 • And He said to them, "Rightly did Isaiah prophesy of you hypocrites, as it is written, 'THIS PEOPLE HONORS ME WITH THEIR LIPS, BUT THEIR HEART IS FAR AWAY FROM ME. 7'BUT IN VAIN DO THEY WORSHIP ME, TEACHING AS DOCTRINES THE PRECEPTS OF MEN.'

  10. Tradition • Mark 7:8-9 • "Neglecting the commandment of God, you hold to the tradition of men.” 9He was also saying to them, "You nicely set aside the commandment of God in order to keep your tradition.

  11. Tradition • Scripture is ALL we need • 2 Tim. 3:16-17 • All Scripture is inspired by God and profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, for training in righteousness; 17that the man of God may be adequate, equipped for every good work.

  12. Tradition • because ALL truth has been delivered • John 16:12-13 • "I have many more things to say to you, but you cannot bear them now. 13"But when He, the Spirit of truth, comes, He will guide you into all the truth; for He will not speak on His own initiative, but whatever He hears, He will speak; and He will disclose to you what is to come.

  13. Tradition • Jude 3 • Beloved, while I was making every effort to write you about our common salvation, I felt the necessity to write to you appealing that you contend earnestly for the faith which was once for all delivered to the saints.

  14. Maryology • Catholic Catechism teaches that Mary is co-mediatrix and co-Saviour with Jesus Christ. • There is ONE mediator between God & man- 1 Tim. 2:5 • For there is one God, and one mediator also between God and men, the man Christ Jesus:

  15. Maryology • There is ONE Saviour for man. • Acts 4:11-12 • "He is the STONE WHICH WAS REJECTED by you, THE BUILDERS, but WHICH BECAME THE VERY CORNER stone. 12"And there is salvation in no one else; for there is no other name under heaven that has been given among men, by which we must be saved."

  16. Maryology • Mary herself needed a Saviour. • Luke 1:46-47 • And Mary said: "My soul exalts the Lord, 47And my spirit has rejoiced in God my Saviour.

  17. Maryology • Catholicism teaches that Mary was "ever virgin” • Bible says she had other children. • Luke 2:7 Jesus was her "first son”. • Jesus had brothers & sisters

  18. Maryology • Matt 12:46 • While He was still speaking to the multitudes, behold, His mother and brothers were standing outside, seeking to speak to Him. • See also Mark 3:31-35, Luke 8:19-20, John 2:12, 7:3-10, Acts 1:14

  19. Formal Priesthood • Catholicism teaches that only church ordained priests may officiate over "eucharist". They teach this is "based upon and a continuance" of Levitical priesthood of OT. • Jesus is only "special" high priest.

  20. Formal Priesthood • Heb. 10:21 • “and since we have a great priest over the house of God” • Heb. 7:23-24 • And the former priests, on the one hand, existed in greater numbers, because they were prevented by death from continuing, 24but He, on the other hand, because He abides forever, holds His priesthood permanently.

  21. Formal Priesthood • Heb. 7:11-12 • For the priesthood being changed, there is made of necessity a change also of the law. 13For he of whom these things are spoken pertaineth to another tribe, of which no man gave attendance at the altar.

  22. Formal Priesthood • There was an OT priesthood. • It was cancelled & superseded by NT. • In NT, we have only ONE special high priest - Jesus. • All believers act as priests offering up spiritual sacrifices.

  23. Formal Priesthood • 1 Peter 2:5. • you also, as living stones, are being built up as a spiritual house for a holy priesthood, to offer up spiritual sacrifices acceptable to God through Jesus Christ. • Rev 1:6 • and He has made us to be a kingdom, priests to His God and Father; to Him be the glory and the dominion forever and ever. Amen.

  24. Formal Priesthood • 1 Peter 2:9 • But you are A CHOSEN RACE, A royal PRIESTHOOD, A HOLY NATION, A PEOPLE FOR God's OWN POSSESSION, that you may proclaim the excellencies of Him who has called you out of darkness into His marvellous light;

  25. The Mass • Catholic Catechism teaches that the Mass is an actual sacrifice and RE-presents the sacrifice of Christ. • Jesus offered Himself once for all time. • Heb 10:10 • By this will we have been sanctified through the offering of the body of Jesus Christ once for all.

  26. The Mass • Heb 10:11 • And every priest stands daily ministering and offering time after time the same sacrifices, which can never take away sins; • Heb 9:25 • nor was it that He should offer Himself often, as the high priest enters the holy place year by year with blood not his own.
