  4. Adams-RossDebate February 19, 2013 Hickory, NC

  5. Propositions 1) The Scriptures teach that the first day of the week as a day of worship is enjoined on God’s people in this age of the world. Affirm: Stan Adams, New Testament Christian Deny: Robert L. Ross, Church of God 7th Day

  6. Propositions 2) The Scriptures teach that the seventh day of the week as a Christian Sabbath is enjoined on God’s people in this age of the world. Affirm: Robert Ross, Church of God 7th Day Deny: Stan Adams, New Testament Christian

  7. Questions for Mr. Ross 1) Does the law say anything to you? 2)Why were the Gentiles called ‘strangers’? 3)Why did God command ‘thy stranger that is within thy gates’ to keep the Sabbath (Exod. 20:10)? 4) Why do you not observe all of the Old Testament? Why such an emphasis on the Sabbath and leave other things alone? 5)Since God sent the Jews into Babylonian captivity for failing to keep the Sabbath, why did God not send the Babylonians into Judean captivity for the same reason?

  8. Questions for Mr. Ross 6) Does ‘the law’ always mean the Ten Commandments? 7) Did you come out of Egypt (Deut. 5; Ex. 20:1-2) 8) Are you a Jew? A Proselyte? 9) Do you bind circumcision as you do the sabbath? 10)Do you bind the penalty for not keeping the sabbath ( Ex. 31:15- death)?

  9. Questions for Mr. Ross 11)What did Paul mean when he said if you bind one part of the law you are a debtor to keep the whole law ( Gal 5:3-4- For I testify again to every man that is circumcised, that he is a debtor to do the whole law. Christ is become of no effect unto you, whosoever of you are justified by the law; ye are fallen from grace. 12) How could the Sabbath, according to Exodus 31:17, be a sign between God and Israel if all other nations were included too? 13) If the restrictions concerning the Sabbath have been removed, how should the Sabbath be kept today?

  10. Jesus spoke commands • Are we bound to obey all of what Jesus said? • Did Jesus speak other commands than the 9? • Did Jesus command anyone to observe the sabbath in the church today? • Did the apostles speak other commands from God? Jesus is the one that we are to hear today- "this is my beloved Son, hear Him."

  11. Proposition Stated The Scriptures teach that the first day of the week as a day of worship is enjoined on God’s people in this age of the world. Affirm: Stan Adams, New Testament Christian Deny: Robert L. Ross, Church of God 7th Day

  12. Proposition Defined • ‘Scriptures’: the Bible, the Old and New Testaments, the word of God • ‘teach’: the word of God says or concludes something, instruct • ‘first day of the week’: Sunday • ‘a day of worship’: certain worship has been ordained for that day

  13. Proposition Defined • ‘enjoined’: commanded, required, binding • ‘God’s People’: Christians • ‘this age of the world’: commonly called Christian age, as opposed to the Patriarchal or Jewish age; the age that began with the reign of Christon the 1st Pentecost after his resurrection

  14. The Issue Is NOT Were the Israelites / Jews commanded to keep the Sabbath under the Law of Moses Did New Testament Christians or apostles ever assemble or do any teaching on the Sabbath or any other day of the week

  15. The Issue IS Did the Lord desire and direct the apostles and New Testament Christians to –Hold (keep) Sunday as a special day – Assemble as a local church to worship him in special ways on Sundays –Observe Sunday as the Lord’s Day

  16. Sunday, a Special Day in NT Sunday was when Jesus was resurrected! –Matt 28:1–10, end of the sabbath, … toward the first day of the week … Jesus … is risen!

  17. In the end of the sabbath, as it began to dawn toward the first day of the week, came Mary Magdalene and the other Mary to see the sepulchre. And, behold, there was a great earthquake: for the angel of the Lord descended from heaven, and came and rolled back the stone from the door, and sat upon it. His countenance was like lightning, and his raiment white as snow: And for fear of him the keepers did shake, and became as dead men. And the angel answered and said unto the women, Fear not ye: for I know that ye seek Jesus, which was crucified. (Mat 28:1-5) Sunday, a Special Day in NT

  18. He is not here: for he is risen, as he said. Come, see the place where the Lord lay. And go quickly, and tell his disciples that he is risen from the dead; and, behold, he goeth before you into Galilee; there shall ye see him: lo, I have told you. And they departed quickly from the sepulchre with fear and great joy; and did run to bring his disciples word. And as they went to tell his disciples, behold, Jesus met them, saying, All hail. And they came and held him by the feet, and worshipped him. Then said Jesus unto them, Be not afraid: go tell my brethren that they go into Galilee, and there shall they see me. Mat 28:6-10 Sunday, a Special Day in NT

  19. Sunday, a Special Day in NT Sunday was when Jesus was resurrected! –Matt 28:1–10, end of the sabbath, … toward the first day of the week … Jesus … is risen! –Mark 16:1–9, the sabbath was past, … the first day of the week… Jesus … is risen; … Jesus was risen … the first day of the week

  20. Sunday, a Special Day in NT And when the sabbath was past, Mary Magdalene, and Mary the mother of James, and Salome, had bought sweet spices, that they might come and anoint him. And very early in the morning the first day of the week, they came unto the sepulchre at the rising of the sun. And they said among themselves, Who shall roll us away the stone from the door of the sepulchre? And when they looked, they saw that the stone was rolled away: for it was very great. And entering into the sepulchre, they saw a young man sitting on the right side, clothed in a long white garment; and they were affrighted. (Mar 16:1-5)

  21. Sunday, a Special Day in NT And he saith unto them, Be not affrighted: Ye seek Jesus of Nazareth, which was crucified: he is risen; he is not here: behold the place where they laid him. But go your way, tell his disciples and Peter that he goeth before you into Galilee: there shall ye see him, as he said unto you. And they went out quickly, and fled from the sepulchre; for they trembled and were amazed: neither said they any thing to any man; for they were afraid. Now when Jesus was risen early the first day of the week, he appeared first to Mary Magdalene, out of whom he had cast seven devils. (Mar 16:6-9)

  22. Sunday, a Special Day in NT Sunday was when Jesus was resurrected! – Luke 24:1–10, the first day of the week… he… is risen

  23. Sunday, a Special Day in NT Now upon the first day of the week, very early in the morning, they came unto the sepulchre, bringing the spices which they had prepared, and certain others with them. And they found the stone rolled away from the sepulchre. And they entered in, and found not the body of the Lord Jesus. And it came to pass, as they were much perplexed thereabout, behold, two men stood by them in shining garments: And as they were afraid, and bowed down their faces to the earth, they said unto them, Why seek ye the living among the dead? (Luk 24:1-5)

  24. Sunday, a Special Day in NT He is not here, but is risen: remember how he spake unto you when he was yet in Galilee, Saying, The Son of man must be delivered into the hands of sinful men, and be crucified, and the third day rise again. And they remembered his words, And returned from the sepulchre, and told all these things unto the eleven, and to all the rest. It was Mary Magdalene, and Joanna, and Mary the mother of James, and other women that were with them, which told these things unto the apostles. (Luk 24:6-10)

  25. Sunday, a Special Day in NT Sunday was when Jesus was resurrected! – Luke 24:1–10, the first day of the week… he… is risen – John 20:1–18, the first day of the week…Jesus standing

  26. Sunday, a Special Day in NT In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. The same was in the beginning with God. All things were made by him; and without him was not any thing made that was made. In him was life; and the life was the light of men. And the light shineth in darkness; and the darkness comprehended it not. There was a man sent from God, whose name was John. The same came for a witness, to bear witness of the Light, that all men through him might believe. He was not that Light, but was sent to bear witness of that Light. (Joh1:1-8)

  27. Sunday, a Special Day in NT That was the true Light, which lighteth every man that cometh into the world. He was in the world, and the world was made by him, and the world knew him not. He came unto his own, and his own received him not. But as many as received him, to them gave he power to become the sons of God, even to them that believe on his name: Which were born, not of blood, nor of the will of the flesh, nor of the will of man, but of God. And the Word was made flesh, and dwelt among us, (and we beheld his glory, the glory as of the only begotten of the Father,) full of grace and truth. (Joh 1:9-14)

  28. Sunday, a Special Day in NT John bare witness of him, and cried, saying, This was he of whom I spake, He that cometh after me is preferred before me: for he was before me. And of his fulness have all we received, and grace for grace. For the law was given by Moses, but grace and truth came by Jesus Christ. No man hath seen God at any time; the only begotten Son, which is in the bosom of the Father, he hath declared him. (Joh 1:15-18)

  29. Sunday, a Special Day in NT Sunday was when Jesus appeared to many as the resurrected Lord –Mary Mag., Mark 16:8–11; John 20:11–18

  30. And they went out quickly, and fled from the sepulchre; for they trembled and were amazed: neither said they any thing to any man; for they were afraid. Now when Jesus was risen early the first day of the week, he appeared first to Mary Magdalene, out of whom he had cast seven devils. And she went and told them that had been with him, as they mourned and wept. And they, when they had heard that he was alive, and had been seen of her, believed not. Mar 16:8-11

  31. But Mary stood without at the sepulchre weeping: and as she wept, she stooped down, and looked into the sepulchre, And seeth two angels in white sitting, the one at the head, and the other at the feet, where the body of Jesus had lain. And they say unto her, Woman, why weepest thou? She saith unto them, Because they have taken away my Lord, and I know not where they have laid him. And when she had thus said, she turned herself back, and saw Jesus standing, and knew not that it was Jesus. (Joh20:11-14)

  32. Jesus saith unto her, Woman, why weepest thou? whom seekest thou? She, supposing him to be the gardener, saith unto him, Sir, if thou have borne him hence, tell me where thou hast laid him, and I will take him away. Jesus saith unto her, Mary. She turned herself, and saith unto him, Rabboni; which is to say, Master. Jesus saith unto her, Touch me not; for I am not yet ascended to my Father: but go to my brethren, and say unto them, I ascend unto my Father, and your Father; and to my God, and your God. Mary Magdalene came and told the disciples that she had seen the Lord, and that he had spoken these things unto her. (Joh 20:15-18)

  33. Sunday, a Special Day in NT Sunday was when Jesus appeared to many as the resurrected Lord –Mary Mag., Mark 16:8–11; John 20:11–18 – The other women, Matt 28:9–10

  34. And as they went to tell his disciples, behold, Jesus met them, saying, All hail. And they came and held him by the feet, and worshipped him. Then said Jesus unto them, Be not afraid: go tell my brethren that they go into Galilee, and there shall they see me. (Mat 28:9-10)

  35. Sunday, a Special Day in NT Sunday was when Jesus appeared to many as the resurrected Lord –Mary Mag., Mark 16:8–11; John 20:11–18 – The other women, Matt 28:9–10 – 2 disciples, Mark 16:12–13; Luke 24:13–32

  36. After that he appeared in another form unto two of them, as they walked, and went into the country. And they went and told it unto the residue: neither believed they them. (Mar 16:12-13)

  37. And, behold, two of them went that same day to a village called Emmaus, which was from Jerusalem about threescore furlongs. And they talked together of all these things which had happened. And it came to pass, that, while they communed together and reasoned, Jesus himself drew near, and went with them. But their eyes were holden that they should not know him. And he said unto them, What manner of communications are these that ye have one to another, as ye walk, and are sad? And the one of them, whose name was Cleopas, answering said unto him, Art thou only a stranger in Jerusalem, and hast not known the things which are come to pass there in these days? (Luk24:13-18)

  38. And he said unto them, What things? And they said unto him, Concerning Jesus of Nazareth, which was a prophet mighty in deed and word before God and all the people: And how the chief priests and our rulers delivered him to be condemned to death, and have crucified him. But we trusted that it had been he which should have redeemed Israel: and beside all this, to day is the third day since these things were done. Yea, and certain women also of our company made us astonished, which were early at the sepulchre; And when they found not his body, they came, saying, that they had also seen a vision of angels, which said that he was alive. (Luk24:19-23)

  39. And certain of them which were with us went to the sepulchre, and found it even so as the women had said: but him they saw not. Then he said unto them, O fools, and slow of heart to believe all that the prophets have spoken: Ought not Christ to have suffered these things, and to enter into his glory? And beginning at Moses and all the prophets, he expounded unto them in all the scriptures the things concerning himself. And they drew nigh unto the village, whither they went: and he made as though he would have gone further. But they constrained him, saying, Abide with us: for it is toward evening, and the day is far spent. And he went in to tarry with them. (Luk 24:24-29)

  40. And it came to pass, as he sat at meat with them, he took bread, and blessed it, and brake, and gave to them. And their eyes were opened, and they knew him; and he vanished out of their sight. And they said one to another, Did not our heart burn within us, while he talked with us by the way, and while he opened to us the scriptures? (Luk 24:30-32)

  41. Sunday, a Special Day in NT Sunday was when Jesus appeared to many as the resurrected Lord –Mary Mag., Mark 16:8–11; John 20:11–18 – The other women, Matt 28:9–10 – 2 disciples, Mark 16:12–13; Luke 24:13–32 –Peter, Luke 24:33–35

  42. And they rose up the same hour, and returned to Jerusalem, and found the eleven gathered together, and them that were with them, Saying, The Lord is risen indeed, and hath appeared to Simon. And they told what things were done in the way, and how he was known of them in breaking of bread. (Luk 24:33-35)

  43. Sunday, a Special Day in NT Sunday was when Jesus appeared to many as the resurrected Lord –Mary Mag., Mark 16:8–11; John 20:11–18 – The other women, Matt 28:9–10 – 2 disciples, Mark 16:12–13; Luke 24:13–32 –Peter, Luke 24:33–35 – The 12 (-Thomas), Mark 16:14; Luke 24:36–43; John 20:19–25

  44. Afterward he appeared unto the eleven as they sat at meat, and upbraided them with their unbelief and hardness of heart, because they believed not them which had seen him after he was risen. (Mar 16:14)

  45. And as they thus spake, Jesus himself stood in the midst of them, and saith unto them, Peace be unto you. But they were terrified and affrighted, and supposed that they had seen a spirit. And he said unto them, Why are ye troubled? and why do thoughts arise in your hearts? Behold my hands and my feet, that it is I myself: handle me, and see; for a spirit hath not flesh and bones, as ye see me have. And when he had thus spoken, he shewed them his hands and his feet. And while they yet believed not for joy, and wondered, he said unto them, Have ye here any meat? And they gave him a piece of a broiled fish, and of an honeycomb. And he took it, and did eat before them. (Luke 24:36-43)

  46. Then the same day at evening, being the first day of the week, when the doors were shut where the disciples were assembled for fear of the Jews, came Jesus and stood in the midst, and saith unto them, Peace be unto you. And when he had so said, he shewed unto them his hands and his side. Then were the disciples glad, when they saw the Lord. Then said Jesus to them again, Peace be unto you: as my Father hath sent me, even so send I you. (John 20:19-21)

  47. And when he had said this, he breathed on them, and saith unto them, Receive ye the Holy Ghost: Whose soever sins ye remit, they are remitted unto them; and whose soever sins ye retain, they are retained. But Thomas, one of the twelve, called Didymus, was not with them when Jesus came. The other disciples therefore said unto him, We have seen the Lord. But he said unto them, Except I shall see in his hands the print of the nails, and put my finger into the print of the nails, and thrust my hand into his side, I will not believe. (Joh20:22-25)

  48. Sunday, a Special Day in NT Sunday was when Jesus appeared to many as the resurrected Lord –Mary Mag., Mark 16:8–11; John 20:11–18 – The other women, Matt 28:9–10 – 2 disciples, Mark 16:12–13; Luke 24:13–32 –Peter, Luke 24:33–35 – The 12 (-Thomas), Mark 16:14; Luke 24:36–43; John 20:19–25 – The 12 (the next Sunday), John 20:26–31

  49. And after eight days again his disciples were within, and Thomas with them: then came Jesus, the doors being shut, and stood in the midst, and said, Peace be unto you. Then saith he to Thomas, Reach hither thy finger, and behold my hands; and reach hither thy hand, and thrust it into my side: and be not faithless, but believing. And Thomas answered and said unto him, My Lord and my God. Jesus saith unto him, Thomas, because thou hast seen me, thou hast believed: blessed are they that have not seen, and yet have believed. And many other signs truly did Jesus in the presence of his disciples, which are not written in this book: But these are written, that ye might believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God; and that believing ye might have life through his name. (Joh 20:26-31)

  50. Sunday, a Special Day in NT Sunday was when Christ was declared to be the Son of God! –Psalm 2.7, I will declare …, Thou art my Son; This day have I begotten thee –Acts 13.33, God … hath raised up Jesus …; as it is written in the second psalm, Thou art my Son, this day have I begotten thee. – Paul said this prophecy was fulfilled when Jesus was resurrected
