  2. Song Choice & Reasoning • Hip Hop Saved My Life is a song written by Lupe Fiasco. • Our group chose this song because we felt that it meshed well with work issues, such as unemployment and job hunting.

  3. Insider Terms • “Flipping yay” = Selling drugs Something he does to provide for his family because he cant find a job. • “Dead from straps” = Dead from guns “elaborate” • “Stack that cheese” = Save up money • “how he says save money” • “700 Plays” = 700 business deals • “business deals”

Work Issues in History • Historically people have had to deal with a shortage of jobs which results in having to actively look for work. • The Great Depression was a time in history where people could not find work or provided for their families. • In today's world unemployment is still an issue, rising to as high a 10.10 percent in 2009 • “A Mead Notebook and a Bic that clicks when its pushed” • In this lyric Lupe describes his subjects resume; the things he will need to get the job.

Connections To Course Work • The oral history Bar Owner meshes well with the lyrics in Hip Hop Saved My Life because they show what its like to struggle in life and be resilient enough to triumph over challenges. • “Then he put him down and went back to the kitchenAnd put on another beat and got back to the mission, toGet his momma out the hood, put her somewhere in the woods. Keep his lady looking good, have her rolling like she should. Show his homies there's away, other than that flipping yay” • “When I came here I didn’t know how to tend bar..But I was looking for a job.. I was a bartender for Blanche from 1980-1992. Since then, I am owner and bartender. • These quotes show that perseverance makes winners.

Terkel Quote • Terkel wrote “The extraordinary dreams of ordinary people” • This quote best represents the song because the man that Lupe Fiasco is rapping about went from dealing drugs and barely supporting his family, but through it all he kept his dream of being a famous rapper alive which allowed him to eventually accomplish his goal.

The struggle to provide • “Crying from the next room a baby in need of some Pampers and some food and a place to sleep” • When you are the head of household it is your role to provide for your family. But when you cant find a job life becomes more difficult. • This song relates to the short story Taxi Driver, Minus the Robert De Niro, by Fernando Ampuero. • The reality of this lyric will resonate with people who are determined to keep looking for jobs because they don’t want to experience being unable to take care of their families.
