Costa Rica is a democratic country • Peaceful • One of the most stable Latin American countries • “Pura Vida” • People are friendly, kind, and happy • A general love for Canadians • Use of “usted” instead of “tu” • “¿Como estás?” • “¿Como estáusted?” • “Pardon senor, ¿puedes decirme cuánto cuesta esta cosa?” • “Pardon senor, ¿puedeusted decirme cuánto cuesta esta cosa?”

Costa rican etiquette • Ticos are known to start conversations with foreigners • They love when foreigners ask them questions, too! • Tico’s have a deep sense of honour • Don’t talk about religion and don’t criticize! • A handshake is the most common form of greeting • Men: firm handshake • Women: pat on the back and/or light kiss • Latin Americans are not punctual. Don’t worry if they’re late!

Costa rican etiquette • Address ticos by their titles. • Doctor: doctor • Teacher: profesor • Lawyer: abogado • Engineer: ingeniero • No title: señor, señora, señorita • Dress to impress • Fidgeting with hands/feet is considered impolite • Making a fist with the thumb sticking out in the middle is considered offensive • Bargaining isn’t allowed in local store/markets
