  4. Petrarchan (Italian) • First 8 lines = octet – abba abba cde cde • (sometimes abab abab ccddee) • Asks a question • Next 6 lines = sestet • Responds to the question • Ideas in the poem • Ideal woman that can’t be obtained. • Hyperbole

  5. Shakespearean (English) • Three quatrains and a couplet • Rhyme Scheme: abab cdcd efef gg • Renaissance time period
