  4. ad hoc Reed Discussion – Nov.6, 2012 • Re: • Purpose – to discuss the feasibility of a Center for Kankakee River Valley Studies – from the perspective of several faculty members of the Reed Hall of Science, ONU • Faculty Present – Randy Johnson, Max Reams, Ken Johnson, Chip Ginn, Larry Ferren, Kevin Brewer, Leo Finkenbinder • Consensus – All present expressed a desire that ONU incorporate the Center into the plans of the current Science/Engineering project which is underway. Furthermore they expressed a • willingness to aid in the developing of ideas and plans for the Center • Constraints of the Center – to be a Center of Studies, and all that entails, within the limits of the Kankakee River Valley Watershed with emphasis on the State of Illinois portion

Discussion cont. • General Ideas – The Center must be: • Be a public demonstration of ONU science and engineering with our Faith and it’s expression in the global arena – e.g. drinking water projects in South America and Africa; stewardship projects on the Kankakee Watershed and others • First class in all regards • Educational first for ONU students then the community and then to all of interest • Be a WOW factor for recruits • Be a WOW factor for the general public • Not be a duplicate of high school experiences • Be a showcase for ONU and what it does in all respects • Not be a duplicate of other repositories on the Kankakee Watershed but rather a facilitator of such information • Articulate with KCC for Environmental Science and Engineering majors – a natural

Ad hoc discussion – developing more specific ideas – these are a few being placed on the table for Phase 1 • Geological– geologic history, bedrock display, flume-sand-bed formation, fossils – hands on • Engineering – efficient integration of irrigation systems and rivers for developing nations, rapid prototyping replication of river beds, heat transfer effects in fluid systems with direct application of Kankakee River fluid dynamics • Zoological– stream table with macroinvertebrates and plants (i.e. liverworts, mosses) – this would be hands-on so rocks can be turned over and flow can be adjusted for engineering modeling

Cont. • Zoological– modeling the Kankakee River – fish, invertebrates, plants – the current 650 gal. aquarium to be expanded, aquaria for tropical freshwater and marine ecosystems • Botanical– incorporate native plants into the dynamics of the Center – wetlands modeling • Chemical– will show the results from analyzing the Kankakee Watershed for a number of different environmental chemical substances. We will display some of the equipment necessary for the results – nutrients, heavy metals, soil, water, etc. • Global Information Systems (GIS) – will be able to organize all above data, from the watershed, into easily retrievable information systems. Classes and research students will be involved

  8. Phase One - A – The River • River flowing with a “walk along” • Flows into deeper (5’) lake which will recirculate water to starting point • Wetlands will be built into the system. These will constitute the wider part of the stream. • Rocks and riffles will be part of shallower parts of stream
