  2. Troubles Loom • Nicholas II is ineffective in leading his troops • Peasants are faced with increasing food prices and wartime suffering • The tsarina’s relationship with Rasputin is causing concern with the country • Nicholas II disbands the Duma in 1916

  3. Grigori Rasputin • “Holy” man from Eastern Russia • Claimed he could heal young Alexei and thus charmed his way into the family • Began to influence Alexandra with military affairs • Caused members of the Duma to become corrupt

  4. Revolution Begins: The February Revolution, 1917 • Nicholas II calls Duma in 1915 • Faced with the Progressive Bloc • Tsar leaves in 1916 and dissolves the Duma • Rasputin killed, December 1916 • February 1917 – major uprisings of the classes against the tsar • The Soviets and the Duma both refuse to run the country

  5. The Provisional Government Emerges • Nicholas II abdicates the throne in 1917 • The Duma becomes the new provisional government • Competed with soviets and peasants • Germany sends V.I. Lenin back to Russia • Army is continually defeated on the battle front • Cause many to believe that Russia should drop out

  6. The Bolshevik Takeover • Bolshevik Revolution: November 1917 • Only allowed those who were communist to vote • Pulled out of war with the Treaty of Brest-Litovsk: March 1918 • Relocated capital from Petrograd to Moscow

  7. Reasons for a “Red Victory” • 1. Fragmentation of the Whites • 2. Leon Trotsky, commissar of war, built a highly disciplined Red army • 3. Use of the Cheka to root out dissenters • 4. Assassination of the royal family • 5. Reds used foreign intervention to create a sense of nationalism
