  1. Predicting Chemical Reactions 10.03.12 Boon Chemistry

  2. Catalyst • Please take out your homework. • Answer the following question on your catalyst:

  3. Objective • I can describe chemical reactions by balancing chemical equations. • I can identify different types of reactions and predict the products of reactions.

  4. Agenda • Catalyst • Video Investigation: Cu (s) + AgNO3 (aq) ?? • Interactive Notes & Practice: Chemical Reactions

  5. Notes: Video Investigation • Reaction: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Sn1dkafX9As&feature=fvwrel • Cu (s) + 2 AgNO3(aq)  ?? • Focus Questions: • What do you see happening? • What do you think the products are? • How could you test whether your prediction is correct?

  6. Think, Pair, Share: Vocabulary Review • Think: Match the types of reactions with their definitions. Put a star next to the reaction type that you think you saw in the video. • Pair: Share your answers with your neighbor. Compare answers. Do you agree or disagree? • Share: At least 5 people will share.

  7. Vocabulary Review Answers • Synthesis • Two or more reactants are put together to form a single compound. • Decomposition • A single compound breaks down into two or more elements or simpler compounds. • Combustion • The reaction of a carbon-based compound with oxygen. • Single Replacement • A single uncombined element replaces another in a compound. • Double Replacement • Parts of two compounds switch places to form two new compounds.

  8. Chemical Reactions Video Examples • Video 1: Synthesis Reaction • http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UmrCdjVTb0I • __ Mg (s) + __ O2 (g)  __ MgO (s) • Describe what you see in the space on your worksheet. • Then, balance the equation.

  9. Chemical Reactions Video Examples • Video 2: Decomposition Reaction • http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zU46hQ_xO0k&feature=related • __ NI3 (s) __ N2 (g) + __ I2 (g) • Describe what you see in the space on your worksheet. • Then, balance the equation.

  10. Chemical Reactions Video Examples • Video 3: Combustion Reaction • http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LzagxjtZrJY • __ CH4(g) + __O2 (g)  __ CO2 (g) + __ H2O (l) • Describe what you see in the space on your worksheet. • Then, balance the equation.

  11. Chemical Reactions Video Examples • Video 4: Single-Replacement Reaction • http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OBdgeJFzSec • __ Mg(s) + __HCl (aq)  __ H2 (g) + __ MgCl2 (s) • Describe what you see in the space on your worksheet. • Then, balance the equation.

  12. Part 4: The activity series • Turn to page 832 of your textbook! • The results of replacement reactions are summarized in the activity series. • Elements are listed from the most active on the top to the least active on the bottom. • A more active element will replace those listed below it in a single replacement reaction. We can use the activity series to predict whether a reaction will occur. • TPS: Where are metals on the activity series? Where are nonmetals? What other patterns do you see?

  13. Activity Series Example • Locate copper (Cu) and silver (Ag) on the activity series. • Which is more active? Will the following reaction occur? • Cu (s) + 2 AgNO3 (aq)  ?? • Answer: Yes! Copper is more active. It replaces silver. • Cu (s) + 2 AgNO3 (aq) 2 Ag (s) + Cu(NO3)2 (aq) • Think Box: Answer the think box question on your worksheet.

  14. Practice: Thumbs Up/Down • Will Calcium (Ca) replace Magnesium (Mg)? • Yes – calcium is higher on the activity series. • Will Lead (Pb) replace Calcium (Ca)? • No – lead is lower on the activity series. • Will Zinc (Zn) replace Nickel (Ni)? • Yes – zinc is higher on the activity series.

  15. Partner Practice • Work with your partner to complete the rest of the worksheet. • Raise your hand when you are done to get a stamp. • Answers are posted on the board.

  16. Homework • What is the molar mass of sucrose (C12H22O11)? • What is the mass of 2 moles of sucrose? • You have a 5 g sample of sucrose. How many moles of sucrose do you have?
