  3. Children • Age 10: Boys in fields with men, apprenticeship, or • entered service • Girls: stayed with mother and learned chores; married young; wealthy girls learned how to paint or read music • Very little affection

  4. YUCK! • Towns were dirty • No running water • Waste and garbage thrown in streets – polluted rivers • Rats and fleas were common, carried disease • Common diseases: measles, cholera, scarlet fever

  5. Did their best to keep clean! • Cleaned teeth with cloth; some used herbal pastes • Bad teeth were pulled out; no anesthesia • Washed hands • Bathed in wooden barrels; cold water – wealthy had warm • Scented clothing with lavender, rose petals, chamomile, daisies

  7. It wasn’t ALL bad  • Children’s games: hoops, lawn bowling, blind man’s bluff, badminton • Adult games: chess, checkers, card games • Had dancing, music • Children had toys: dolls, wooden swords, hobbyhorses • Good Lord = lots of food and merry times • Holidays
