The world half marathon is a world championship at the end of the day and it's important. Asha for Education Mission Statement “To catalyze socio-economic change in India through the education of underprivileged children” Started in 1991 at the University of California, Berkeley 66 Chapters world wide – 45 in US, 14 in India, 7 in Europe, Singapore and Australia 4 Star rating from Charity Navigator 100% Volunteer-based, Zero overhead, Minimal Hierarchy, Non-political, non-religious Asha MIT/Boston chapter founded in 1995, 11 active projects currently, raising more than $50,000 annually

Navsarjan, Gujarat Intro • 3 schools in the outskirts of Ahmadabad • 5th through 7th grade • ~ 100 students and ~ 21 teachers • Total cost per child ~ Rs. 600 per month Goal • Quality education to Dalit children facing harsh discrimination in govt schools Challenges • Parents willing to pay Rs. 600 for boys but not so for daughters; Out of 100, only 14 were girls • Marriage at an early age very common ASHA’s contributions • Asha setup a scholarship program for female students (Rs. 400/student/month) • $25,000 dispersed since 2007 • Results in 2009 - 121 boys, 89 girls (up from 14 girls only a couple of years ago, target of 40% reached)
