  2. Bernard Leach • British studio potter and art teacher • Regarded as the “Father of British studio pottery” • Grew up in Japan where he became studied pottery • Later moved to St. Ives, Cornwall where he built Leach Pottery • Included a traditional wood burning Japanese kiln

  3. Bernard Leach Continued • Worked closely with Shoji Hamada • Saw pottery as a combination of art, philosophy, design and craft • Published “A Potter’s Book” in 1940 which helped jumpstart his career • Advocated simple and utilitarian forms (function over form) • Taught many potters that later became famous in their own areas
