  4. The imperfect is used for actions that were repeated habitually. • La señorita Woeste siempre daba tarea. • Ms. Woeste always gave homework. • Los perros comían la tarea de Ernesto todos los días. • The dogs ate Ernest’s homework every day.

  5. The imperfect is used for actions that “set the stage” for another action. • Nosotros leíamos cuando mi papá entró. • We were reading when my dad entered. (Note: “entered” is preterit) • Señor Castañeda bebía café cuando le golpeó un avión de papel. • Mr. Castañeda was drinking coffee when he was hit by a paper airplane.

  6. The imperfect is used for telling time and stating one’s age. • ¡Demi Moore tenía 16 años cuando Ashton Kutcher tenía 1 año! • Demi Moore was 16 years old when Ashton Kutcher was one year old. • Eran las siete de la noche. • It was seven at night.

  7. The imperfect is used for physical descriptions in the past. • Christina Aguilera tenía pelo negro pero ahora tiene pelo rubio. • Christina Aguilera had black hair but now she has blonde hair. • Chad Johnson llevaba un casco. • Chad Johnson was wearing a helmet.

  8. The imperfect is used for information surrounding an event. • Llovía cuando fuimos al partido de fútbol. • It was raining when we went to the soccer game. • Mercedes concentraba cuando sirvió el balón de vóleibol. • Mercedes was concentrating when she served the volleyball.

  9. The previous examples all fall within the general rule for using the imperfect: The imperfect is used for past actions that are not seen as completed.

  12. The preterit is used for actions that were repeated a specific number of times, or occurred during a specific period of time. Los actores practicaron por muchas semanas para la obra de teatro escolar. The actors practiced for many weeks for the school play. Ayer nosotros escribimos tres cartas. Yesterday we wrote three letters.

  13. The preterit is used for actions that were part of a chain of events. Bean le robó el bolígrafo rojo a Señora Bryant y se sentó en sus papeles. Bean stole Mrs. Bryant’s red pen and sat on her papers. Bean no corrigió los papeles sino los escondió. Bean did not grade the papers, but he hid them. Luego, Bean se durmió. Then Bean fell asleep.

  14. The preterit is used to state the beginning or the end of an action. Las jugadoras empezaron el partido de Powderpuff. The players began the Powderpuff game. La campana tocó a las dos y treinta y cinco y señaló el fin del día. The bell rang at 2:35 and signaled the end of the day.

Choose the correct verb form: • Cuando yo (tenía/tuve) cinco años, me encantaba columpiar. • Ayer por la mañana, (me levanté/ me levantaba), (me cepillé/ me cepillaba) los dientes, y (me vestí/ me vestía), luego yo fui a la escuela. • De pequeño, mi hermano (era/ fue) travieso, pero mi hermana y yo (éramos/fuimos) muy bien educadas. • (Hacía/ Hizo) frío cuando los dos niños (se peleaban/ se pelearon) en el patio de recreo. • Normalmente, la escuela termina a las 2:35, pero el miércoles pasado (terminó/ terminaba) a las 1:35.
