  2. 1. Personal Letters • A personal letter usually has six parts: the heading, the date, the salutation, the body, the complimentary close and the signature. In most informal personal letters, the heading may be omitted. • Personal letters are used for social interactions. They are written for family concerns, thanks, congratulations, invitations, consolations, favors, condolences, apologies and so on.

  3. A model personal letter

  4. Example of a Family Letter 11 Dec., 2001 Dear Mom and Dad, It is difficult to believe but I have already been here at South China University of Technology for over four months! During the first few weeks I often found myself thinking of home and family. I guess you could say that I had a serious case of "homesickness". The longer I am here, however, the more I am enjoying my life and studies on the campus. The Chinese people here are all nice to me, and I have made many new friends who have come from all over China.

  5. Example of a Family Letter (To continue) Even though I am very happy here, I still think of each of you often and appreciate so much all that you have been doing for me. How are you all at home? I hope you are all keeping well. See that Dad smokes less, so that he can enjoy better health. I feel very excited at the thought that in another week I shall be with you again on holiday. I am leaving here early on Thursday, the 23rd, and I shall arrive in Boston on Friday morning, so I shall be home somewhere about lunchtime.I've got some Christmas presents for you all. I'm not going to tell you what your present is, so it will be a surprise. I hope you will like it. I can't say how much I want to see you all again. The 23rd can't come too soon! Your grateful son, Jack

  6. Task: Write a letter to your family, telling them about your life and studies at college Dear Mom, Thanks for your letter encouraging me to move forward when I feel homesick and blue. It is true that I am still adjusting to everything around me here on campus although it is already the beginning of the third month. I admire those of my classmates who seemingly need no adjustments at all and deal so well with everything around them. But don’t worry, Mom, I am catching up! I feel I’ve learned so much in the last couple of months. I am learning to do things by myself and feel great when I finish something independently. I have even learned to wash my own clothes!

  7. Task: Write a letter to your family, telling them about your life and studies at college Mom, I applied for an email account with Hotmail yesterday and here it is: xgzhu@hotmail.com. You may send me a message on Dad’s laptop. I can receive it here in a couple of minutes. Amazing, isn’t it? We may ‘talk’ to each other via email now. Lovingly yours, Silvia

  16. 3. Letters  of Complaint

  17. Letters  of Complaint • Writing a letter of complaint is a serious matter, which should sound much more formal than a personal letter, because it handles something that might hurt the good relations. Therefore, your letter should sound firm in giving a justified complaint while at the same time restrained and polite in using language.

  18. A Sample letter of Complaint Dear Mr. Philip Flood, We are pleased to be offered a wide selection of e-household utensils from your company. After your salesman dwelt on the usage of the burglar alarm, we chose one in good faith because we were robbed last year. However, the burglar alarm has often activates when anyone shouts out nearby. So my grandchildren use it as their toy. Within two weeks, our neighbors visited five times and the policemen three times. Yesterday when I turned on the TV, it actually skirled again. In view of the above-mentioned facts, we request the following:1) Arrange a technician for repairs at once;2) Change a new one if beyond repair;3) Change another type if due to faulty manufacture. Kindly let us know your decision as soon as possible. Your prompt attention to this matter will be much appreciated. Yours sincerely Frank Hamilton

  19. Write a letter about one fake commodity you bought there. Dear Mr. Li, On 12 May, I bought a MP3 Branded as Moon Box, Model P, Product No. oq3001528, made by Huafeng Information Technology Development Co. Ltd. at your shop.Unfortunately, when I came back home I found the product number printed on the box does match with the number printed on the back of the player. The number on the box is oq3001528, but the number on the player is od3001528. I could not get registered with the number on the Net. And the player can only play in Pop, Normal and Rock modes. It cannot play in Jazz and Classic modes as it claims. Therefore I’m sure the player I bought is a faked one. Sincerely, Zhang Yin

The room, which had a view of o parking lot instead of the bay, had not yet been cleaned, so we found dirty towels on the beds and cigarette ends on the floor.
