1. OPT and Traveling Aboard: For F1 Students In, Us F1 regulations allow students participating in optional practical training to travel abroad. But there lies some additional risks and documentations to be prepared. Students may encounter significant visa delays by customers and border protection upon return to the US. The decision to travel must be taken by the student personally with preparations of facing risks involved. For pre-completion OPT students As pre-completion OPT students are still on student visa, the procedure to visit abroad and re-entry will be same. Additional documentations are not essential. Only a valid I-20 should be signed for travel with passport and visa stamp. For Post completion OPT students Desi OPT students involved in post completion OPT are allowed to travel on a temporary basis that is less than 5 months. In order to re-enter US to continue employment, following documents are needed. Valid passport for at least 6 months from the date of re-entry Valid f1 visa stamp

2. I-20 form with a travel signature of less than 6 months old. Valid EAD work permit Proof that the student is returning to resume employment. Traveling while OPT application is pending Students on post completion OPT may travel aboard while the application is pending with necessary cautions for some reasons. Visa renewal while on Post completion OPT Students traveling while on OPT program with expired F1 visa are required to apply for new F1 visa. . Applicants need to provide evidence of “binding ties” to their home country since F1 visa is a non immigrant intent visa. For change of status and travel Students, who apply for change of status to H1B or any other immigration status, should speak with immigration lawyer prior to the travel. Students who are using cap-gap extension should not take a trip abroad during the time between end of EAD and start of H1B unless they are allowed to return to the US with the H1B visa stamp.
