  2. Enjoying the story Read the rest of the story – which reading strategies help us to clarify any misunderstandings in vocabulary? Consider the emotions the boy goes through in the story – highlight where the changes occur and annotate them on your story.

  3. ‘Show’ not ‘Tell’ Roald Dahl is highly skilled in the art of ‘show not tell’. This means describing a characters feelings through narrative details rather than by simply stating the facts. Example: ‘Ellie was nervous.’ (Tell) ‘Her palms were sweating, making her grip on the pen difficult. Whenever the door opened, she swung around suddenly to see who it might be.’ (Show) Try to find examples of where Dahl does this in the text.

  4. The greater the detail of the image painted, the more intense the effect… If you carry a knife you’re more likely to get stabbed yourself
