  2. Presentation Topics • Drivers & benefits of the work • Brief history of EURESCOM Xcoop studies • EURESCOM project P707 tasks & objectives • Specifications - requirements, development & validation • Implementation - areas of study • Dissemination of Results

  3. Why are EURESCOM Partners Collaborating in this Work? • Opening of world markets will not see the total decline of correspondent working in the short term • The granting of more international licenses will require inter-working between many more partners (capacity providers) • Consistency and automation of process is essential for operational efficiency • A common understanding and resolution of issues for systems implementation is essential for success • Results are applicable to all inter-operator connect activities, not just international ‘cross-border’

  4. The SDH Xcoop Interface - EURESCOM History (I) P107 / P109 - E-METRAN / Management of Pan-European Transmission Networks (Jan 1992 - March 1994) P408 - Pan-European TMN, Experiments & Field Trial Support (March 1994 - December 1996) P408 T12 - Pan-European TMN, Experiments & Field Trial Support (SDH add-on) (May 1996 - December 1997) P707 - TMN X Interface Studies & Experiments for SDH [including remaining work in P408 T12] (March 1997 - December 1998)

  5. The SDH Xcoop Interface - EURESCOM History (II) P107 & P109 - Preliminary studies & specifications P408 - Enhanced specification for Path Provisioning & Fault Management + PETLab experiments P408 T12 - Enhanced spec. for Performance Man. & Admin. of NM + new PETLabs + additional experiments P707 - Completion of specifications & experiments, implementation recommendations & solutions THE EVOLUTION FROM PAPERWARE IMPLEMENTATION & OPERATIONS

  16. Operational Process Validation Methods • Investigate methods for validating individual processes against requirements and for validating process interactions • Methods for performing consistency check of processes • Recommendations for process checking System Performance Assessment • Generate test methods for assessment of overall system performance • Specify testing configurations • Identify most critical system elements that affect overall performance

  17. Database (MIB) Solutions • Definition of database schema • Recommendations for database partitioning • Recommendations for database implementation • Investigate MIB synchronisation issues and methods Management Communications • Recommend preferred options for DCN implementation • Recommend preferred options for protocol choice • Recommend preferred DCN topology & architecture for management communications resilience • Identify evolution limitations for DCN • Identify options for disseminating non-real time information

  18. Evolution Planning • Identify key factors to be resolved during evolution planning • Generate check lists for evolution planners • Recommendations for setting evolution stage targets • Recommendations for setting and administering version & build control • Identify issues for working in an environment requiring support to multiple system versions

  19. Application Suitability Methods(for administering the management system) • Identify & recommend efficient & cost effective test methods • Generate guidelines for specifying test criteria • Generate guidelines for pass / fail evaluation • Recommend ‘problem’ location and resolution methods • Provide guidelines for the generation of test specifications

  20. Progress of SDH X interface bilateral agreements METRAN MoU METRAN OA ETSI now time fault, config perf, admin, resourcing, etc P107 P408 P707 P109 security P710

  21. In Conclusion • P707 is actively downstreaming results into Standards (ETSI TC/TMN) • Utilising a realistic case study has greatly enhanced project ability to focus upon genuine implementation problems • Investigation of real implementation problems is expected to prove useful for other technologies • Thank you for your attention
