  1. Society and Mass Culture Objective: Understand how education and publishing grew; identify the impact of modern advertising and new product’s on people’s lives; describe popular leisure activities

  2. Education and Publishing • Increased literacy in the US (more people could read) • More reading of books, magazines, and newspapers • Competition to sell more newspapers pushed publishers to try new gimmicks • Filled paper with spectacular stories, special features like comics and sports

  3. Modern Advertising and New Products • Gave people information about new goods (ex. Electric washing machine) • People saw ads in newspapers and magazines • Department stores – sold everything from clothing to furniture to hardware • Mail-Order catalogs included pictures and descriptions of merchandise • Different people in different regions could buy the same goods

  4. Urban Parks and World’s Fair • Leisure (free time) activities changed • Parks provided grass and trees in the city landscapes • Amusement Parks provided place where people could go for fun • World’s Fair – people would travel from around the nation for the foods, shows, and amusements. Showed off technology.

  5. Spectator Sports • People could follow the same professional teams and leagues • Played same sports across the country • Racial discrimination kept African Americans from joining baseball leagues • Negro American League and Negro National League formed

  6. Shows • Vaudeville – mixture of song, dance, and comedy • Ragtime – blend of African-American songs and European musical forms • Movies began to compete with live entertainment • First movies were silent and added as the final feature of a vaudeville show
