  4. I. Crises of the Cold War… C. In an attempt to start an uprising in Cuba, the U.S. trained Cuban exiles, called La Brigada, to invade the island 1. They landed on the Bay of Pigs (1961) 2. Invasion was a disaster & the uprising never happened

  5. I. Crises of the Cold War… D. Khrushchev met with JFK (June 1961) & demanded that U.S., Britain, & France withdraw from Berlin 1. JFK refused 2. Soviets built the Berlin Wall to block movement between the Soviet sector & the rest of the city •Most people living in E. Berlin (Soviet zone) wanted independence and wanted the Soviets to leave. •As a result, many in East Berlin would cross into West Berlin. •197,000 (1950); 331,000 (1953); 30,000/month (1960) •By 1961, thousands of skilled workers and professionals were fleeing into W.   7. Fall of the Berlin Wall *On November 9, 1989, the East German government announced that its citizens could visit West Germany & West Berlin. *The fall of the Berlin Wall paved the way for German reunification, which officially took place on October 3, 1990.
