Main Aims To keep peace throughout the world; To develop friendly relations among nations; To help nations work together to improve the lives of poor people, to conquer hunger, disease and illiteracy, and to encourage respect for each other’s rights and freedoms; To be a centre for harmonizing the actions of nations to achieve these goals.

  3. How did it begin? The United Nations is made up of 192 countries from around the world. It is often called the UN. It was set up in 1945, after the Second World War, as a way of bringing people together and to avoid further wars. It started with 51 countries. The United Kingdom is one of the original members. Germany did not join until 1973.

  5. General Assembly Main policymaking organ of the UN Comprised of all 193 Members of the UN Meets from Sept. to Dec and whenever required Each member has one vote. Six main committees In the plenary, all committees meet together

  6. 6 committees of the GA First Committee (Disarmament and International Security Committee) is concerned with disarmament and related international security questions;  Second Committee (Economic and Financial Committee) is concerned with economic questions;  Third Committee (Social, Humanitarian and Cultural Committee) deals with social and humanitarian issues;  Fourth Committee (Special Political and Decolonization Committee) deals with a variety of political subjects not dealt with by the First Committee, as well as with decolonization;  Fifth Committee (Administrative and Budgetary Committee) deals with the administration and budget of the United Nations; and  Sixth Committee (Legal Committee) deals with international legal matters.

  10. Trusteeship Council Only meets if the need arises 1994 was suspended with the independence of Palau

  11. Secretariat Secretary-General is the head Serves a 5 year term Carries out the day to day work of the UN

  12. Resolutions Essentially a recommendation to solve an issue Success depends on the member states’ willingness to act One main submitter Can be several co-submitters Made up for preambulatory phrases (outline the problem) and operative clauses (explains the solution)

  13. MUN Take on the role of a delegate of a member state Research your nation and the issues from your committee Write and later debate resolutions Make an opening speech Wear fancy clothes

  14. What now? Commit to MUN through April 9 Start researching Look at the UN website, Cyberschoolbus site, and other places to find out about how the UN functions Read the news Make sure you have signed up for a committee Clear your calendar on Thursday afternoons
