  11. Cultural notes Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows is the last of the series of seven books about Harry Potter, written by J. K. Rowling and published in 2007. The Naked Sun, by Isaac Asimov, published in 1957, is a science fiction book that is also a mystery, in which an inhabitant of the Earth of the future is called to investigate a crime committed on the planet Solaria, inhabited almost exclusively by robots. The title refers to the light of the sun which creates panic attacks on Earth where people live in subterranean cities. Ordinary Genius, the story of Albert Einstein, is the biography of the great scientist, written by Stephanie Sammartino McPherson, published in 1995. Gone with the Wind, a novel written by Margaret Mitchell, published in 1936 and adapted for the cinema in 1939, tells the story of Scarlet O’Hara, who owned a plantation in the deep south of the USA during the American Civil War.

The Autobiography of Martin Luther King is a biography compiled from a series of authentic documents and published in 1998 (King was assassinated on 4th April 1968). The book sleeve shows a photo of Martin Luther King and in the background, there is a framed photo of Mahatma Gandhi whose pacifist ideals were a source of inspiration to Dr. King. Dragon Ball Z is a Japanese manga, created in 1984 by Akira Toriyama. Manga is the Japanese word for comics. Whilst mangas originated in drawings from the 17th and 18th centuries, modern day mangas became especially popular during the American occupation of Japan (1945-52).

Captain America, the superhero of the Marvel comics series whose name is Steve Rogers, was created in 1940, with a strong underlying political connotation as the American hero who would save the world. In the Post-war period the series lost popularity but came back in 1964 under the new name of The Avengers, with alternating success over the last 40 years. The hero dies in 2007, but the series continues with a new Captain America to carry on his mission in the world.

Neighbours is an Australian soap. It’s broadcast five times a week and it’s about the daily lives of the residents of Ramsay Street. The famous singer Kylie Minogue starred in this soap when she was seventeen.
