Strategic vs Operational SWE’s STRATEGIC PLAN IS: • 10,000 foot view of the organization (high level) • Defines the core beliefs, values and purpose of the organization • Identifies our dream future (our vision) for the Society • Identifies what the future for women in engineering would be like if the our dreams come true • Identifies our current assumptions for the future • Identifies the current goals we feel are needed to reach our dream future • Provides 2-D road map to reach our goals by identifying points A and B (objectives)

Strategic vs Operational SWE’s STRATEGIC PLAN DOES NOT: • Provide details on “how” to achieve the Society’s goals • Does not provide “value judgments” on Society’s goals • Does not detail “how” to meet the objectives • Does not provide “if-then” scenarios • Does not provide timelines • Does not provide metrics

Strategic vs. Operational OPERATIONAL PLAN • 10 foot view of the organization’s work • 3-D Mapquest, GPS road map to reach our objectives • Defines the specifics of how we’re going to reach the objectives • Identifies specific tasks required, timeframes and metrics • Identifies “Business as usual”, “Improvements” and “Strategic” parts of an objective • Operational Plan goes hand-in-hand with the financial plans

  10. Strategic Plan - Where we are today • Driver/Owner: Virginia Connolly (Pres. Elect) • Updated Strategic Plan – Done • “Endorsed” by BOD1 in August • Several non-BOD people there • Presented to COR to “adopt” at Nashville • Goal is for final approval by Board after Conference • Communiqué containing the Plan, COR Motion, Summary of Surveys and FAQ sent out Tuesday

Strategic Plan - Where we are today • COR members received this communiqué • FAQ’s included background information on the process involved in refreshing the plan • History of the refreshing process • COR involvement in Vision (BHAG) and vivid descriptions • Meetings • Surveys • People involved

Operational Planning Moving from Strategic to Operational Current Work • Working to identify FY09 objectives • SWE leaders at BOD1 prioritized the objectives • Virginia Connolly wanted 3-4, she got 5 • Goal #2/Objective #4: Increase recognition of SWE members as influential and sought after leaders. • Goal #2/Objective #2: Increase the quantity of professional development programs for all career stages. • Goal #4/Objective #2 (tie): Increase number of potential leaders in the pipeline. • Goal #4/Objective #5 (tie): Enhance networking mechanisms for connecting members throughout SWE. • Goal #3/Objective #4: Increase the number of discussions with industry, government, and academic influences.

Operational Planning Current Work • Developing a full Operational Plan for Goal #2/Objective #2 (Professional Development objective) • Bernice Brody and Jean Frankel (Tecker) • PD Operational Plan will be presented in Nashville • Plan will be used as a template for the operational plans for the other objects

Operational Planning Very Near Future Work • Review other prioritized objectives • Small group to look for touch points and similar focuses • Try to reduce number of objectives if possible • Develop operational plans for each objective • By committees or groups • Develop financial plans for each objective • Work to be completed by December

  15. Strategic Planning Process • Goal: Have all SWE entities think, act, plan, budget and work together strategically • BOD • Finance Committee • HQ • COR (ESFig and Mega Issues) • Committees • SPC • Tie all the pieces together into a cohesive plan • Timelines • FY09 • FYXX+1

  22. SPC Work • Work up to Conference has been largely behind the scenes • Worked closely with BOD, HQ, committee chairs and Tecker to get to “Where we are today” • Working on timelines and Process • All “going forward” work will start during and after conference

SPC Work • Put Process into action and lead the charge • Work on metrics • Work on Society scorecard with respect to strategic objectives • Review operation plans • Update webpage • Review programs for alignment with Plan • Coordinate with COR and ESFig • Coordinate with other entities to make sure they get their work completed and/or input into Planning Process
