  3. Vikings • the Viking Age in Britain began in the 9th Century AD • Ended in 1066 • the first invasion in AD 793 at Lindisfarne • treaty between the English King Alfred and Viking King Guthrum in AD 880

  4. Danelaw • The area eventually settled by Vikings • It formed a boundary separating Anglo-Saxon England from Viking England • was formed in AD 880 after a treaty between King Alfred and King Guthrum

  5. Canute - a most effective ruler • King of England from 1016, Denmark from 1018, and Norway from 1028 • Canute divided England into four earldoms – Northumbria, Wessex, Mercia and East Anglia.   • ended the practice of paying Danegeld • under his rule trade provided
