  1. Project #6Surface Modification of Carbon Nanotubes for Property Improvement • Sponsored ByThe National Science Foundation Grant ID No.: DUE-0756921 Cuong Diep – pre-junior, Chemical Engineering Milena Fernandez – pre-junior, Computer Engineering College of Engineering and Applied Science; University of Cincinnati; Cincinnati, Ohio Dr. Vesselin Shanov- Chemical and Materials Engineering, CEAS Dr. Noe Alvarez- Chemical and Materials Engineering, CEAS

  2. Goals • To design a transformer using CNT threads Objectives Design transformer Modify CNT threads by the processes of doping and coating. Replace Cu wires by CNT threads Using a battery, light up LEDs CNT- Carbon nanotubes Cu- Copper LED- light-emitting diode, used as a light source  Transformer- electrical device

  3. Final Product Battery connected to primary coil LED connected to secondary coil CNT threads will replace coils Source: Energy Efficiency Transformer

  4. Tasks • Learn how a transformer works • Understand properties of CNTs • Learn process of doping and coating CNT threads • Choose ideal transformer design • Wrap CNT threads on transformer • Connect battery and LED to CNT threads • Light up LED!

  5. Materials • Carbon Nanotube threads • Nitric Acid • Sulfuric Acid.

  6. Figure 1: Diameter Measurement for AP48, 4.25 M HNO3 Nitric Acid sample 6

  7. Methods Doping • Soaking • 4-Probes Results Resistivity • Lowers through doping

  8. Timeline • Week 1-2: Research topic and related material • Week 3-6: Attend seminars, run experiments, collect data • Week 7-9: Analyze test results, conclude results • Week 10-11: Finish up final deliverables: Final PowerPoint Presentation, Final Technical Paper, Final Poster and NSF Summary Report.
