  2. Blot Stains, Don't Rub Them Dab stains with a cleaning solution and a clean cloth, paper towels, or a sponge. “The key is blotting. Blotting puts a small amount of pressure on the stain to soak it up,” Tarboxsays. “Rubbing causes the particles to get ground into the carpet fibers, and this can lead to the premature breakdown of those fibers” Always blot from the outside of the stain inward, as blotting outward can spread the stain.

  3. The Club Soda Process You may have heard that club soda is effective against beer and wine stains. It's true—if you use it correctly. Blot the area with the soda on a cloth. If that doesn't work, mix one part white vinegar with one part water and pour it into a handheld sprayer. Spray the solution on the entire stained area and let it sit for 10 to 15 minutes to soak in. Then press a clean sponge onto the area to soak up the solution and the stain. Tarbox says you may have to repeat this process to eradicate the stain. Once the stain is gone, rinse the spot with warm water. Use your hand to brush the carpet strands into their natural direction. Finally, lay white paper towels over the area and weigh them down with something heavy, like a phone book. The towels will absorb the dampness from the carpet. Leave the towels in place until the carpet is dry, usually about one day.

  4. Home Made Carpet Cleaner What You'll Need: • Small spray bottle • teaspoon dish washing liquid • tablespoon white vinegar • cup warm water • teaspoon baking soda • Clean absorbent towel • Clean sponge

  5. Home Made Carpet Cleaner Directions: Gather the ingredients to make your carpet cleaner. Along with being an amazing concoction, vinegar and baking soda put on quite a show when mixed. Vinegar is an acid, and baking soda is a base, so when the two mix together, they create carbon dioxide, which results in lots and lots of cleaning bubbles. Add the dishwashing liquid to the spray bottle along with vinegar, and then top with the warm water. Working over a sink, with the top of the spray bottle close at hand, add the baking soda, and then quickly screw on the top of the spray bottle. Vacuum over the area and then wipe gently with the abrasive side of a sponge. Spray the soiled area generously with the carpet cleaner, and then gently rub and dab with the towel. You should start to see cleaning results right away. Continue dabbing and wiping with the towel to absorb the water and completely remove the stain.

  6. Home Made Carpet Cleaner Synthetic Carpet Cleaners • Dip a white cloth into these solutions and apply to the stain. Never pour the solutions directly onto carpeting. • Detergent solution: Mix 1/4 teaspoon of a translucent liquid dishwashing detergent, such as Dawn or Joy, into one cup of lukewarm water. • Vinegar solution: Mix one cup of white vinegar with two cups of water. • Solvent solution: Use an oil solvent. Or substitute nail-polish remover, such as Cutex Quick & Gentle non-acetone polish remover.

  7. Home Made Carpet Cleaner Natural Fiber Carpet Cleaners • Place these solutions (except the solvent) in spray bottles and mist them lightly onto the stain. • Detergent solution: Mix one teaspoon of translucent liquid dishwashing detergent, such as Dawn or Joy, into 1 cup of lukewarm water. • Vinegar solution: Mix 1/4 cup of white vinegar with 1/4 cup of water. • Ammonia solution: Mix one tablespoon of clear household ammonia with 1/2 cup of lukewarm water. • Solvent solution: Same as for synthetic carpets (see above).
