Risk Factors vs. Protective Factors • Risk Factor • Something that can contribute to child abuse or neglect • Protective Factor • Things that can help protect a family from child abuse or neglect occurring
Protective Factors • Increase the health and well-being of children and families. • Protective factors help parents to find resources, supports, or coping strategies that allow them to parent effectively. • Linked to a lower incidence of child abuse and neglect.
Protective Factors • Many protective factors in general the ones we will look at over the next three months are from the Center for the Study of Social Policy • 2001 grant from Doris Duke Charitable Foundation • New framework and approach • Pilot phase in seven states for two years • Strengthening Families National Network

Concrete Support in Times of Need: Actions to Take • Connect to economic resources, job training, social services, health care, child care subsidies, and other benefits • Know your community • Provide for immediate needs • Take their culture into consideration when connecting them with providers and resources • “warm transfer”
Concrete Support in Times of Need: Being Culturally Aware • Understand that culture is more than ethnic or racial categories. Culture can apply to age, gender, sexual orientation, religion and even community attitudes and more.
