  4. High School vs. Middle School • school hours: 7:55 – 2:45 • Late Start every Monday; 1st per @ 8:28 • 6 period day • 55 minute periods • 8 minute passing periods • semester system • 40 community service hours • 230 credits for graduation

  5. PYLUSD Graduation Requirements • 4 years Language Arts • 2 years Math including Algebra 1 • 3 years Social Science • 2 years Science (1 year physical, 1 year life) • 1 year EITHER Fine Art, Foreign Language, or Career Technical Education course • 1 semester Health and 1 semester Careers • 2 years Physical Education/Athletics • 230 total credits • 40 hours Community Service • California High School Exit Exam (CAHSEE)

  6. California High School Exit Exam (CAHSEE) Taken in March of 10th grade year 2 sections: • English/Language Arts • Math (including Algebra) Online tutoring available for students who don’t pass on first attempt EHS pass rate: LA 96%, Math 95% Need more info? www.ocde.org

Cal State and UC Minimum Entrance Requirements • 4 years Language Arts • 2 years Social Science - World & US History • 3 years Math - Algebra, Geometry, Algebra 2 • 2 years Laboratory Science – Biology & Chemistry (CSU accepts Bio/Earth Sci or Bio/Chem) • 2 years Foreign Language • 1 year Fine Art • 1 year College Prep Elective • Test requirement (SAT or ACT) • No D’s accepted

Medical Sciences Academy Program for students interested in being a: • Freshman Year Option: • Nurse • Doctor • Paramedic • Physical • Therapist Applications available on the website: www.esperanzahs.com under Bulletin Board Health/Medical Sciences • Year-long course that replaces required Health/Careers class Turn in application to Middle School Counselor

Medical Sciences Academy Medical Careers I : Intro to safety, anatomy & physiology, infection control, body systems, medical terminology, vital signs, and CPR training Medical Careers II : Pathophysiology (UC approved elective): Study bodily diseases, hands-on testing for diseases, medicalinterventions Medical Careers III : Medical assisting, working with patients, injections, EKG’s, surgical set-up, externship placement (spring semester of 12th grade)

  10. Engineering and Manufacturing Academy Two pathways: 1.Engineering - UC/CSU approved Engineering Pathway *Take Engineering Drawing CAD/CAM orEngineering Tech 2. Distinguished Scholars Rigorous curriculum of Honors and AP courses 3.5 GPA, no D or F grades, good citizenship Distinguished Scholars diploma and special recognition at graduation Great for college applications More Information and applications are available on the Esperanza webpage (www.esperanzahs.net) Applications are due to the Middle School counselor, EHS counselors will pick up at registration

  12. Pink Course Selection Sheet • Language Arts and Math placement is determined by district criteria, which includes current levels, grades, and placement test results. Middle School classHigh School class Pre-Algebra ➔ Algebra 1A or Algebra 1 Algebra 1 ➔ Geometry or Geometry Honors Geometry ➔ Algebra 2/Trig or Algebra 2/Trig Honors

  13. Pink Course Selection Sheet • All students take one semester of Health and one semester of Academic Studies/Career Planning • Choose either PE, Dance, PE Band, Color Guard, or Athletics. List the sport(s) you plan on trying out for. • Athletic Directors will be at the middle schools on: YLMS – 4/29 BYMS – 4/30 Travis – 5/01 • Spring physicals will be on May 13th from 4:00 - 8:00 at EHS gym. Cost is $30.

  16. 9th Grade Elective Choices • Choose Science or an elective (and alternate) • Choose Foreign Language or an elective (and alternate) • If you are choosing a first-year foreign language, please indicate your alternate language choice. We will do our best to accommodate elective choices.

  18. Class Placement and Homework Expectations • Expect 30 minutes per night of homework for each academic class. Honors classes may require more. • The computer arranges your schedule of classes. We are unable to accommodate teacher requests, order of classes, etc.

Freshman Focus What is Freshman Focus? • A program designed to help students with the transition to high school • A campus that that will help freshmen have a sense of belonging and connectedness to the school and staff in a smaller environment • The option to have break and lunch on their own campus, OR the option to join upper classmen on Main Campus • Activities and events designed specifically for them by ASB • The opportunity to build stronger relationships with grade-level peers

Link Crew / Freshmen Orientation Date: TBD pending PYLUSD calendar 8:00 – 12:00 noon Freshmen get “linked” up with an upper classman who will be their Link Crew Leader for the upcoming school year. Events include: • Introduction to high school including the do’s and don’ts. • Activities with Link Crew Leaders and small group of classmates. • Guided tours of campus. • Activities with freshmen and Link Crew Leaders will be held throughout the school year.

  22. Freshmen “Taking Care of Business”August TBD 8:00 - 11:00 am • Turn in registration paperwork, have school picture taken, purchase ASB card, PE clothes, yearbook, and spirit wear • Students will receive their list of classes • Counselors available to see students on a walk-in basis

First Week of School • First Day of school - pick up schedule on Main Campus starting at 7:15 a.m. • On the first day of school schedule changes will be made for scheduling errors only. • Freshman schedule change day – designated day for Freshman schedule changes during the first week of school.

Academic Support For Students • Parents are encouraged to communicate with teachers, beginning with Back-To-School Night in September • Parents can sign up for the monthly Counseling newsletter on the homepage of the EHS website • Access to teacher email via EHS website • Parents and students can access student grades on AERIES/ABI • Students seek extra help from teachers on an individual basis • Free tutoring by EHS teachers in the Library

  25. Activities and Getting Involved Esperanza offers many activities, clubs, athletic teams and other ways to get involved. There is something for EVERYONE! Be sure to look through the handouts in your student’s folder to learn more about some of the opportunities available. A complete list of campus organizations and advisers is in the EHS Student Handbook.

Clubs and Activities • Award winning Speech and Debate and Academic Decathlon teams among the best in Orang County. • National champion Dance and Cheer Teams • Sports teams that have won 50 C.I.F., State, and National Championships and hundreds of League Championships over 40 years. • Over 30 clubs including: Red Cross Club, Cure Finders, Aztec Maniac, Key Club, Theatre Club, HOSA, Leo Club, National Honor Society, PTSA, etc.
