Our Changing World • In the next 6 minutes: • 60 babies will be born in the U.S. • 244 babies will be born in China. • 351 babies will be born in India. • Knowledge is increasing at incredibly rapid rates: • 1 week’s worth of the New York Times contains more information than an average person in the 18th century would have encountered in a lifetime. • The amount of technical information doubles every 2 years. • China will soon become the #1 English-speaking country in the world.   5. The Last 25 Years • A few of our technological advances . . . • DVDs • Digital cameras • Automotive navigation systems utilizing GPS technology • PDA’s • Grocery store self-checkout lanes • Satellite TV • E-mail • World Wide Web • . . . What will the next 25 years bring?

  6. The next 25 years? • Low skill jobs will continue to be eliminated. Today we see: • Grocery store checkers replaced by self-checkouts • Receptionists replaced by voicemail systems • Bank tellers replaced by ATM machines • Toll takers replaced by EZ tags • At the same time, technological advances create more jobs requiring higher skill levels.

  7. What will this mean for you? • You will need to know more—no matter what you plan to do beyond high school • Most of the jobs available when you are ready to enter the workplace will require some form of education or training beyond high school.

What will you need in high school? • 4 years of English Language Arts • 2 years of a foreign language • 4 years of social studies • 4 years of math • 4 years of science • Speech, fine arts, and computer classes Research shows that a specific set of courses will help ensure that you have the greatest chance of success after high school:
