  2. Introduction Life was quite different during the colonial time period in American history. During the 1700s, the people did not have the modern conveniences that we enjoy. When you learn about the different trades of this time period you gain a better understanding of how different colonial life truly was. www.naches.wednet.edu/NachesValley/nvms/library/trades.htm

  4. The Task library.thinkquest.org/.../images/splash350.jpg Working in a group of 3 to 4 students, you will research a trade that was done during the 1700s. Then, dressed in colonial clothes, each student will “play the part” of a colonial child and share information the group has learned about the trade that they researched. Your information will be supported with power point slides the group has created that will help illustrate the trade. Along with other “colonial kids” trade groups, your presentation will be made to people of the 21st century.

  5. Researching with the Big6™! What do I need to do? DONE----- Define the information problem, the task. Identify what you need in order to begin the task. (For this project, the teacher will introduce 3 things that you need in order to start your research.) Second---

  6. You need…. …your assignment from your teacher of a colonial trade to research with 2 or 3 students. Your group might be assigned a colonial…… silversmith? soldier? lighthouse keeper? innkeeper? surveyor? farmer? wigmaker? sailmaker? miller? dressmaker? cabinetmaker? blacksmith? school teacher? doctor? glassblower? shipwright? printer? sea captain?

What is the job of your tradesperson? • How does a person train to work in this trade? • Does your tradesperson work alone or are other people working with him? • What product or service does your tradesperson provide? • 2. Where does your tradesperson do his work? • What are the tools and materials needed by your tradesperson to do his job? • Where does the tradesperson get his tools and materials that he works with? • How does he use these tools and materials in his job? • 3. What is a typical day like for a person working in your trade? • How long does he work each day? • Does he do the same thing everyday? • What type of customer does your tradesperson service? • What other interesting things did you learn about your • tradesperson’s job that you want to share?

These questions will also be included on the handout. • What pictures illustrate what you learned about your trades person? • What would a typical outdoor sign look like that would advertise your trade? • What type of clothing does your tradesperson wear when he is working? • What does the place look like where your tradesperson works? • What pictures can you find that will illustrate what your tradesperson makes or does?

Access Your Resources • Search the contents. • A Day in the Life of a Colonial….. book • Plan on using this entire book to research the questions about your assigned colonial trade. • Other books & a print encyclopedia set • Look at the table of contents (front of the book) to help guide you in finding pictures relating to your assigned colonial trade. • Look at the index (back of the book or last volume of encyclopedia) for specific location for pictures for your trade. • Websites • Skim over the material at all the different websites given looking for pictures relating to your assigned colonial trade.

Use the Information Found • The library teacher will help you save your pictures. • Use the “Trash-n-Treasure” method of note taking. • The group will decide what information should be written down. • Each person in the group will be responsible for recording information for one of the questions. • Do not copy sentences (plagiarism). Choose the • information that is most important to present. Write a short • paragraph that answers your question. • Each person will say about five sentences. • The group decides on the 2-3 pictures that will be put in the • presentation power point. • Remember the pictures have to visually support what is being presented. • Practice your presentation. • Practice makes perfect! • Get your colonial kid costume together and bring to school. • All costumes are in school by Tuesday, January 12 for dress rehearsals.
