Toronto International Research Experience

Joshua Auld shares his foreign research experience in Toronto, Ontario, where he collaborated with the ILUTE project team at the University of Toronto. He worked on the development of an Integrated Land Use Transportation and Environment microsimulation model and contributed to the scheduling and GPS surveying aspects of the project.

Foreign Experience Overview • Spent 30 days in Toronto, Ontario • June 14 – July 14 • Stayed at a short-term (1 month) condo rental • Worked at the Sandford Fleming Engineering Building at the University of Toronto • Collaboration with the ILUTE project team in the Transportation section of the Civil Engineering Department • Attend ILUTE project meetings, seminars, weekly discussions, etc.

University of Toronto • Largest University System in Canada • 63,000 undergrad, 10,000+ graduate • Public research university • On of the top non-U.S. universities in the world • Three campuses – main campus is St. George • Surrounds Queens Park – large downtown park and regional government complex

ILUTE Project • Project team run by Professor Eric Miller consisting of many grad/undergrad students and several other professors • Developing an Integrated Land Use Transportation and Environment microsimulation model • Comprised of a number of different sub-models: • Land Use – auto ownership, location choice, etc • Transportation – TASHA scheduling model, trip assignment • Environment – currently working on this stage, integrating Mobile6 with assignment results

  5. Areas of Collaboration - Scheduling • ILUTE microsimulation includes the TASHA scheduling model • Developed by Prof. Matt Roorda • Generates activities randomly • Schedule them into project/activity schedules according to a system of rules • Resolve conflicts/adjust schedule to fit

  6. Areas of Collaboration – Scheduling (cont.) • Worked with Matt Roorda on updating scheduling rules • Include results of conflict resolution model • Make more general set of scheduling rules • Paper submitted to TRB for publication

Areas of Collaboration –GPS surveying • Currently implementing a GPS survey – TRIPS • Under development for a number of years • Much effort in designing survey • Automatic link matching, mode finding, etc. • Advised on equipment/technical issues • Discussed and compared survey methods • Testing - Side-by-side comparison of survey results

Work summary • One and possibly more publications relating to activity scheduling • Potential of implementing new system in TASHA • Dr. Miller serving on thesis committee • Advising on dynamic activity modeling • Continuing discussions on GPS surveying • Also visited Dr. Sean Doherty – detailed discussing of survey techniques
