  2. Convert Solar Energy into Electricity

  3. Convert Solar Energy into Electricity When you install a solar power system on the roof, it is like a miniature powerhouse that takes energy from the sun and converts it into electricity. It is possible through small structures called the Solar Cells. Several cells constitute a solar panel. The cells are made from silicon and other materials. When the sunlight strikes the cells, the photons in the sunlight bombard the surface and knock some loose electrons. These electrons flow to the part of the solar cell where electrons are missing. Thus, an electrical current flow in the circuit that reaches to an inverter attached to it. The direct current generated by the solar panel is converted into another form, the alternate current which is usable electricity. In less efficient solar panels, only 15% to 20% of the solar energy converts into the electrical power whereas in advanced solar cells the figure can reach as high as 60 percent.

  4. The process in detail The brief introduction of the solar panel doesn’t give a clear understanding of how a solar panel produces the electricity. Here is some technical stuff. 1. A silicon cell has the structure like a sandwich. The upper layers are thin strips of metallic electrodes. They perform the vital task of extracting the power and conducting it to the external circuit. 2. The internal layers are made of positive and negative type silicon. These inner layers produce electricity when the photons from the sun bombard the surface. 3. The positive and negative silicon are made by combining the silicon with different elements that either adds electrons to the surface or remove. Boron and Phosphorus are the examples.

  5. 4. The N-Type silicon has a slightly positive charge whereas the P-type silicon has a slightly negative charge. The type indicates which charge will get attracted to the silicon. 5. When the photons get bombarded on the top electrode and strike the silicon atoms, they transfer the energy to some of the silicon electrons to escape from the atom. These ‘free electrons’ accumulate within the N-Type silicon. 6. The electrodes that are connected to the external circuit flow these electrons from N-Type to P-Type. The P-Type silicon is called the ‘electron sink’. 7. When there is a continuous flow of electrons, it creates an electrical current.

  6. As mentioned earlier, this current is Direct Current or DC which needs to be converted into Alternate Current or AC to run electrical appliances. Alternatively, this current can be used in charging batteries which can act as the power source when needed.
