  1. Macduff talks with Malcolm Act Four Scene 3 “Macbeth”

  2. Malcolm: My friend, let us mourn for Scotland. Macduff: No, let’s fight for Scotland instead!

  3. Malcolm: I would fight, but I am afraid you are working for Macbeth and will betray me. Macduff: What? I am not treacherous!

  4. Malcolm: But Macbeth may have corrupted you. Macduff: No. I have left everything, my family and home, behind to come here and offer to help you.

  5. Malcolm: Exactly, why would you leave your family unless you think they are safe. That is why I don’t trust you. Macduff: Trust me. If you won’t fight then Scotland is lost.

  6. Malcolm: Okay, I trust you, but you really don’t know me. If you did you would not want me for your king. Macduff: I do know you, I know your family and your upbringing.

  7. Malcolm: You only think you know me. I will be a worse king than Macbeth. I will rape your daughters and take all your possessions. Macduff: True, you may be worse but in my heart I do not think that will be the case. Scotland will be better off with you on the throne.

  8. Malcolm: No. I have no virtues that will make me a good king. Macduff: Oh but you do. You are the son of a good man and a godly woman. I often saw your mother praying. I know you have goodness in you. But, if you won’t fight then I will take my family and leave Scotland forever.

  9. Malcolm: Believe nothing that you have heard me say. I am a good man and I will fight. I had to test you. I had to know that you were really on my side. Macduff: Thank goodness. Scotland now has a chance.
