  1. Predict Directions for Predicting: • While you read, look for clues that cause you to think about what will happen next or that make you think about what you will read about next.

  2. Clarify Directions for Clarifying: While you read, note areas of the text that cause you confusion. Also, determine what you need to do to clear up your confusion. Confusion can be caused by unfamiliar vocabulary, sentences, ideas or concepts. Sentence Starters: This is confusing to me because… When I began reading this part I thought ________, but now I realize that…. When I read this, I struggled because…. This word confuses me because of _______, I tried to figure it out by … I reread this section and discovered…. This part cleared up my confusion about __________ because...

  3. Summarize Directions for Summarizing: After you read, restate the main ideas, events or points of this section of reading. A good summary includes: Key people, items or places Key words Key ideas or concepts Sentence Starters: The main point of this section is… If I put the ideas together, I now understand that… The most important thing I read was… The overarching ideas of this section were…

  4. Question Directions for Question: • Ask a question that others in the group can discuss about the text. • Ask one “right-there” question – a question that can be answered based on the information in the text. • Ask one “under-the-surface” question – a question that begins with “how” or “why” that looks deeper at the main ideas of the passage. Sentence Starters: “Right-there” question starters: Who…? What…? Where…? When…? “Under-the-surface” question starters: How…? Why…? I wonder… I am curious about…

  5. Recorder Recorder: writes down what the team says.

  6. Presenter Presenter: is prepared to report out for the group; is the master of ceremonies for a group presentation.

  7. Checker Checker: checks to see that all elements of the task are complete; checks the time; checks and gathers resources.

  8. Facilitator Facilitator: Clarifies for the team the goals and helps them stay on task; ensures that everyone participates.

  9. Harmonizer Harmonizer: Ensures that the group works together; notices if someone needs help; recognizes each persons contribution.
