Tokugawa Shogunate • Brought peace and stability to the Japanese system of feudalism after a period of warfare. • Shogun’s were given central authority • sankin-kotai • daimyo would spend time at the shogun’s court to ensure loyalty • metsuke • group of officials who would report on what was going on in the country

  4. Contacts with the West • Christian missionaries led by Francis Xavier spread Christianity in Japan • Christianity was seen as a threat to the power of the traditional Japanese system • Shogun imposes isolation on Japan in 1635 because of fear of foreign influences.
