  2. What is Irony? Ironyis about expectations. Irony: the opposite of what is expected. Three kinds of irony • Verbal • Dramatic • Situational

  3. VerbalIrony A character says one thing but means the opposite Also calledsarcasmor beingsarcastic. Examples The locker room smells really good. Awesome! Another night of homework. Yes!

  4. DramaticIrony When the reader understands more about the events of a story than a character. You know something that a character doesn’t. Example Tim’s parents are proud of the “A” he got on the test, but we know he cheated. Alex writes a love poem to Judy but we know that Judy loves Devin.

  5. SituationalIrony When what actually happens is the opposite of what is expected. Something about the situation is completely unexpected. Example • When former U.S. president Ronald Reagan had an assassination attempt on his life, all the bullets initially missed the President; however, a bullet ricocheted off the bullet-proof Presidential limousine and struck Reagan in the chest. Thus, a vehicle made to protect the President from gunfire was partially responsible for his being shot. • The Wonderful Wizard of Oz is a story whose plot revolves around situational irony. Dorothy travels to a wizard and fulfills his challenging demands to go home, before discovering she had the ability to go back home all the time. The Scarecrow longs for intelligence, only to discover he is already a genius, and the Tin Woodsman longs to be capable of love, only to discover he already has a heart. The Lion, who at first appears to be a whimpering coward, turns out to be bold and fearless.

  6. Review Something that is ironic is unexpected. If unexpected by a character, it’s dramatic. If unexpected by everyone, it’s situational. If it’s sarcasm, it’s verbal.
