Minimum

Minimum. What is the Minimum? The minimum is the smallest number in a data set. It has the least value. Ex. 3, 7, 8, 10 The minimum is 3 Ex. 24, 15, 18, 28, 16 The minimum is 15. Put the data in chronological order: 15, 16, 18, 24, 28. Maximum. What is the Maximum?

  1. Minimum • What is the Minimum? • The minimum is the smallest number in a data set. It has the least value. • Ex. 3, 7, 8, 10 The minimum is 3 • Ex. 24, 15, 18, 28, 16 The minimum is 15 Put the data in chronological order: 15, 16, 18, 24, 28

  2. Maximum • What is the Maximum? • The maximum is the largest number in a data set. It has the greatest value. • Ex. 3, 7, 8, 10 The maximum is 10 • Ex. 24, 15, 18, 28, 16 The maximum is 28 Put the data in chronological order: 15, 16, 18, 24, 28

  3. Range • What is the Range? • The range is the difference between the minimum and the maximum • Remember: The minimum is the smallest number The maximum is the largest number

  4. Range • Ex. 3, 7, 8, 10 The range is 7 • Ex. 24, 15, 18, 28, 16 The range is 13 • How do you find the range? • Subtract the highest value minus the lowest value (maximum – minimum) 10 - 3 Put the data in chronological order: 15, 16, 18, 24, 28 28 - 15

  5. Let’s Practice! smallest value 5, 9, 10, 10, 11, 14, 17 5 Minimum = ______ Maximum = ______ Range = ______ 17 greatest value 12 maximum – minimum 17 – 5

  6. Try Another One! Put the data in chronological order smallest value 14, 8, 3, 9, 20, 18 3, 8, 9, 14, 18, 20 3 Minimum = ______ Maximum = ______ Range = ______ 20 greatest value 17 maximum – minimum 20 – 3

  7. Landmarks on a Line Plot • Each X represents a data point • The minimum is the first X minimum = 1 • The maximum is the last X maximum = 15 X X X X X X X X X X X X X 0 2 4 6 8 10 12 14 16

  8. Landmarks on a Line Plot 10 Minimum = ______ Maximum = ______ Range = ______ first X 75 last X 65 max – min X X X X X X X X X X X X X 0 10 20 30 40 50 60 70 80

  9. Landmarks on a Stem and Leaf Plot The MINIMUM is the first leaf (tens) (ones) Combine the stem and leaf to read the number 2 tens + 2 ones = 22 The MAXIMUM is the last leaf Combine the stem and leaf to read the number Range = Maximum – Minimum 5 tens + 5 ones = 55 55 – 22 = 33

  10. Landmarks on a Stem and Leaf Plot 2 Minimum = ______ (tens) (ones) 35 5 8 Maximum = ______ 0 0 5 7 1 33 Range = ______ 2 35 – 2 1 1 2 3
