License plates and place value • Collect or make up license plates. • Example 785-wrx 855-pvs • Assign letters a numerical value • Example A, B,C,D = 1 E,F,G,H =2 • Place these letters and number values into a key, so that students can find the number they will be using to complete the operation. A = 1 F = 2 L = 3 X = 5 • Set up practice sheets, and license plates (index cards) for students to work with. • Demonstrate to students how to use license platesand key to solve. • Demonstrate how to set problem up. • This can be used to compare numbers value is it is greater than, less than or equal to. • Students can write out how many 1’s, 10’s , and 100’s in each #. • In addition students can take the numbers and write out in extended format the value of the number
