European Standardization – Important Bodies

European standardization can be described as a consensus-building process that includes several players and bodies. As the standards development is started by market needs, industry plays an important role. Here, European standards are developed via one of the three European Standards Organizations that include the European Committee for Standardization (CEN), the European Telecommunications Standards Institute (ETSI), and the European Committee for ElectrotechnicalStandardization (CENELEC).

  1. European Standardization – Important Bodies

  2. European standardization can be described as a consensus-building process that includes several players and bodies. As the standards development is started by market needs, industry plays an important role. Here, European standards are developed via one of the three European Standards Organizations that include the European Committee for Standardization (CEN), the European Telecommunications Standards Institute (ETSI), and the European Committee for Electrotechnical Standardization (CENELEC).

  3. ESO The European Standardization Organizations are recognized by Regulation (EU) No 1025/2012. All three bodies – CEN, CENELEC, and ETSI have been working with the European Commission since 1984.

  4. CEN CEN stands for European Committee for Standardization. It brings together the national standardization bodies of 33 European countries. It also offers an effective platform for the development of European standards and other technical documents in different products, services, materials, and processes.

  5. CENELEC CENELEC plays an important role in standardization in the electrotechnical engineering field. It creates market access at a global level via its close collaboration along with the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC).

  6. ETSI ETSI or European Telecommunications Standards Institute delivers globally-applicable standards for information as well as communication technology (ICT). These standards include fixed, mobile, broadcast, converged, and internet technologies. Its main purpose is to produce and maintain the technical standards required by its members.
