Established in 1917, Ellington Field was one of the first military airfields in the United States and was named after Lieutenant Eric Ellington, who was killed on a training mission. • The ATC tower was constructed in 1954. • NASA established Ellington Field as its base for astronaut flight training in the early 60s. • In 1976 Ellington Field was officially deactivated by the Air Force, however, the Texas Air National Guard, Texas Army National Guard and the US Coast Guard maintained military presence. • Ellington Field was acquired by the City of Houston in 1984 to use as a third civil airport and was renamed Ellington Airport on January 14, 2009. The controllers are contracted through the Air National Guard (Dynamic Science Intl.). The tower is operational 24 hours 7 days a week. • The Aircraft Rescue and Fire Fighting (ARFF) station is owned and operated by the Air National Guard. • EMERGENCY RELIEF • Natural disasters • WMD response and facility support • EFD PERSONNEL • Maintenance - 19 personnel • Operations – 4 personnel • Administrative Support – 3 personnel • Management – 3 personnel

EFD FAST FACTS (cont.) • AIRSIDE • Pavement Area - 2,545,000 square feet. • All taxiways and runways group V. • Perimeter Fence - 8 miles of 8’ fence. • Drainage Ditch - 17 miles of mostly unlined ditches. • Total Acreage - 2,200 acres which does not include Military, NASA or US Coast Guard properties. • Mowed Acreage - 1,100 acres are mowed including hay production. LANDSIDE • 380+ acres green field commercial & industrial sites. • 100+ acres developed pad-ready sites. • 20 miles of roadways. • HAY PRODUCTION • Square and round bales sold to the public. • 3rd year of program. • Profit - $60K - $70K annually (weather dependent) • O&M Program

SPACE PORT • Feasibility study and economic and environmental assessment has been initiated. • FAA certification application will parallel economic and environmental assessments. • Business planwill include markets for aerospace industry and related manufacturing, research and development, and commercial applications.
