  3. Covent gardens • The Covent Gardens were the centre of London life in the 1800’s. • The Gardens included a Piazza (market place) and a theatre (built in 1858). • Everyone from working class traders, artists and actors and the aristocracy visited the Gardens.

  5. The Theatre • The Theatre was rebuilt in 1858 after the Great Fire of London destroyed the old one. • It is also known as the Opera House. • It was designed by EM Barry who also built the Floral Hall next door.

  6. Isaac Pocock

Isaac Pocock • Isaac Pocock was a playwright, and many of his plays were produced at the Covent Garden Theatre. • For England Ho!, was a melodramatic opera, and opened at Covent Garden on 15 December 1813. • John of Paris, a comic opera adapted from the French, was first performed on 12 October 1814 • Robinson Crusoe, or the Bold Buccaneers was a romantic drama in two acts and was performed as an Easter piece in 1817.

  9. The Piazza • In 1871 the glass roof was added to The Piazza. • The Piazza’s market was always bustling with street criers, shoppers and prostitutes. • The Piazza’s architecture is still the same today.

  12. London’s bridges • The construction of Old London Bridge started in the year 1176. It took 33 years to build and opened in 1209. • There were houses, shops and stalls. People did actually live on it. There were about 138 shops on it. • Old London bridge was replaced by Rennies Bridge in 1831 – more modern • Famous London Bridge nursery rhyme comes from the demolishing of the Old London Bridge.

  13. London’s bridges • Old London Bridge was used for 622 years. • Rennies Bridge was sold (yes, SOLD!) to Robert McCulloch on the 18thApril 1968. • The bridge was moved to Lake Havasu City, Arizona. • The bridge sold for US$2,460,000. That is £ 1,568,471.40. Which is 3,108,608.93 NZD.

  15. Zoological Gardens in Regent's Park. Hippo, Obaysch, was donated by Egypt in 1850 in exchange for English greyhounds and deerhounds. First hippo in Britain since prehistoric times.

Currency • 20 shillings in £1 - a shilling was often called 'bob‘. • 12 pennies in 1 shilling • 240 pennies in £1 Pennies were broken down into other coins: • a farthing (a fourth- thing) was ¼ of a penny • a halfpenny was ½ of a penny • three farthings was ¾ of a penny • A £1 coin was called a Sovereign and was made of gold. A paper pound often was called a 'quid'.
