  3. Research: “Chronicle of Philanthropy” “Close Relationships Key to Winning Some of 2009’s Biggest Gifts” (February) “Charities Must Adapt Appeals to Reach Young Donors, Poll Finds” (March 25th) “For more and more charities, there’s an app for that” (February 25th)

  4. “Exploring Adolescent-Organization Relationships: A Study of Effective Relationship Strategies with Adolescent Volunteers” • Strategies to retain a strong volunteer-base • Attract a high volume of younger volunteers • Importance of volunteer work for younger publics • The more direction and effective communication that occurs between the organizational public and the adolescent public, the better equipped the younger public will be able to carry out their jobs.

Relationship: Elementary School Publicity Plan • Have a guest speaker come in and read the children a short story • Publicity at school book fairs • Speakers during lunch or library time • The ICBF could hold a contest between the classrooms • Talk to the teachers about having a short story contest

  6. Relationship: Secondary School Publicity Plan • Have teachers offer extra credit for attending the book festival • Short story contest listed above • Speak about volunteer opportunities in English classes • Posters around the school

Relationship: Surrounding Area Publicity • Coralville • Visit schools • give students incentive for attending the book festival over the summer • Fliers across coffee shops • Fliers in the Coral Ridge Mall • Cedar Rapids • Visit schools • Fliers around Eastern Iowa Airport • Iowa City • Create fliers • coffee shops • various dorm rooms around campus and buildings • Iowa City transit and Cambus • Take advantage of student summer orientations

Relationship: Surrounding Area Publicity • Des Moines & Quad Cities • Airport fliers • advertise Iowa City so people will want to visit • Attempt to attract high school juniors to come visit campus in the summer • For incoming freshmen—student orientations could bring Des Moines residents to Iowa City and thus to the book festival

Request: Finding Volunteers • Bring in speakers to the surrounding high schools to talk about the Iowa City Book Festival • Get involved with University of Iowa students • Contact Parent Teacher Association and get parents and teachers involved in volunteering • Advertise for volunteers in the Iowa City Public Library

Recognition: Facebook Page Weekly Updates Monthly Updates Facebook Page • Update the ICBF’s status with information about the event, promotional messages for the festival, volunteer information, promotion of sponsors • Continue to invite people to be a part of the group • Comment on discussion board-start new discussion questions, answer questions posted by members of the group • Update schedule and list of authors who are attending the event • Post videos of readings from previous festival • Post links with information about local book clubs and other reading/ writing events in the community • Links/pictures/videos about authors who will be attending the festival the following year

Stewardship: Five-Year Plan Year Two Year Three • Thank you letters to the volunteers from ICBF • Updates letting donors know how their contribution is being used • Developmental news with the ICBF • Recognition of the event’s success • Establishing a blog • Merge with UI Libraries • UI Library network includes: • 11 campus libraries • 5 million volumes and 39,000 serials • Ranked top 30 in collection size

Stewardship: Five-Year Plan Year Four Year Five • Establish corporate sponsors • Barnes and Noble • UNESCO • Iowa Division of Tourism • AT&T/Verizon/Sprint The ICBF will be a highly recognized and established event attracting tourists, Iowa City residents and many other corporate sponsors. As the years progress the ICBF will be able to expand their contact base by merging efforts with the library, and establishing a corporate fundraising committee. The ICBF will accumulate the desired sum of $350,000 towards the advancement of literature.
