Stamp Act 1765: tax on all printed items. • Stamp Act Congress colonists joined to repeal • Declaratory Act: right to make tax decisions on colonists. • Townshend Act (writs of assistance or warrants) assist customs in arresting smugglers. • Angered colonists caused trouble, leading to Boston Massacre. • Tea act 1773: British East India Company not charged taxes on their tea. • This again leads to trouble in Boston Tea party. • Coercive (Intolerable) Acts (1774) restricted rights, like trial by jury. • 1st Continental Congress – drafted letter to King and Parliament demanding rights be restored. • Battles of Lexington & Concord (Massachusetts)

  3. 2nd continental Congress: Declaration of Independence (1776). • Revolutionary War 1776- 1783 • Articles of Confederation 1781 • Treaty of Paris 1783: U.S. gains Independence, British troops to leave US soil, U.S. gains land to the Mississippi River.
